Notes: Walk up to the bar and what do you ask for? A Beer, naturally. It doesn't always matter what it is, or what you want in this case. You want something light? We've got A Beer for you. You want something hop forward? We've got A Beer for you. You just want to camp out on that bar stool and crush something? We've got ABeer for you. We're only marginally apologetic that it's not kettle soured with Mosaic & Amarillo hops. This is better. This is a straight forward, refreshing extra pale ale utilizing the newest varieties of German aroma hops (Hallertau Blanc & Mandarina Bavaria). Call it a session IPA if you need, call it a pale ale if you prefer, hell, it doesn't matter what you call it, what matters is that you stop talking about it and throw ABeer down yer gullet.

Poured from a 16oz "tallboy" into a standard pint. Cool artwork on can.
Chill-hazed gold in color with a modest cap of bright white foam.
Aroma-Faint hop note, pale malt
Taste-Crisp, cracker malt,spicy/herbal hop note. Light-bodied and very refreshing. Quaffable crowd-pleaser that tastes good out of the can as well. Pair with some grilled dogs with the works.

pint pull at ATG brewery and smokehouse. Nice beer. Good golden color. Not much head which quickly dissipates. A little bit more piney hops than normally found in lager but not over done. Good for this hot afternoon and would be great at the ballgame if Louisville were playing tonight.

Traded for this ages ago but I have no idea when as there wasn't anything stamped on the bottom of the can. Never had anything from Against The Grain before and based on the description on the can, this seemed like something basic that you'd reach for if you were thirsty. Sure enough, that was the case as this was a typical, textbook American Pale Ale with hardly anything memorable to take away from it during my session...

This poured a mild amber with some haze in it and enough head top it off, although it was uneven and settled quite rapidly. Very little lacing was left aside from something resembling a thin collar around the top of my pint glass. Lemon zest, honey, urine, and some hops in the nose as the taste was basic, balanced, and bitter like a German Pils or something of the like. Some dank Mosaic came through as this warmed up this this needed more carbonation and a brighter flavor, and neither were present here.

The same could be said for the alcohol but this *was* an American Pale Ale and I didn't expect this to be terribly strong. The description of this orders you to throw it "down yer gullet" and if you want something mindless, a bit skunky, and subtly dank, you've stumbled across the right brew with this one! Worth a go once when you just want a beer...

Appearance: Pours a pale yellow and gives about 2 fingers of white foam. This dissipates but it leaves a bubbly film on top. Nice carbonation coming up in my glass. Some lacing.
Aroma: I get both malt and hops but more on the malt side. Slight pungency from the hops. Resinous.
Taste: While I smell more malt that hops when I taste it I get a good dose of piney hops right off the bat.
Mouth Feel: Medium feel with good carbonation. Bitterness hangs around a while.
Overall: I am not a HUGE lager fan but I like one once in a while. This is one I would have anytime. Tasty and refreshing.

Tall can

Pour with a moderate haze, typical khaki cap, leaves low sheeting and ringed lacing.

Zesty, lemony nose.

Crisp and tasty, light citrus, crackery malts...decent session type ale...worth a try...went well with some chedder and crackers

The seCANd half of yesterday's Happy New Against the Saugatuck Grain Beer Sunday (Week 699) left me with several more CANs to be added to The CANQuest (tm). Once I CANplete their reviews & ratings, they will become an entry in the current WBAYDN thread.

From the CAN: "Brewer Owned"; "Extra American Pale Ale"; "Art & Layout by RobbyDavis.com"; "Come At Me Bro!"; "When you're looking for something hoppy, A Beer is here. When you want something light and refreshing, grab A Beer. When you're hung up on something local, go for A Beer. Or, if you just need one to the dome, crush A Beer. Whatever you need, we've got A Beer for you."; "You Mad Bro?"

I was only mad at myself for having incorrectly added this beer to the site's database & having to cop to my mistake to have it corrected. 8=( I took out my frustration by Crack!ing open this CAN & giving it a heavy-handed Glug. This resulted in two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with moderate retention. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, calling forth The Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon & Croesus for a taste. Nose was very grapefruit citrus with a biscuit malt backbone, very much reminiscent of a Session AIPA. Hmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very bitter, more towards grapefruit rind & pith without very much malt presence to balance it. The Notes are kind of vague about its style, but as an APA, it strikes me as too bitter. Finish was dry and bitter, but not all that refreshing. Meh.

Setting out to make a beer that renders thought, assessment, celebration and culinary art quite useless, Agains the Grain's latest culmination of laissez faire asks you to just drink the beer.

A Beer is a light copper ale with a creamy, arid froth. Its toasty malt scent is laced with a floral and citrus tandem while its taste is dryly of caramel and granola. The middle palate trends bitter and with continued dryness that brings greater focus to the bitter and spicy hops. Light, crisp and clean in body, a mild hop-derived astringency and grain flavors plague the finish while its overall demeanor is much more sessionable than the common pale ale. Overall, the beer is jam-packed with a whole lot of meh.

16 ounce can, bought this on a recent trip to Louisville a few weeks ago. No dating on it that I was able to find. Drank my other cans when I was there, and I saved my last can for a proper review. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy gold color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells mostly like citrusy (citrus peel, grapefruit) and grassy hops, along with some bready malt. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma too, but there's also some earthy herbalness noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's a bit slick with a good amount of carbonation. I liked this American Pale Ale, I'd like to try this one again. $9.99 a 4-pack.

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger and a half high frothy white head that died down, leaving a large patch patch of bubbles on the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of floral hops and mangos are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and also has some hints of lemon and orange citrus along with a light to moderate amount of hop bitterness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer goes down very easily and can be considered sessionable. The hops contribute just enough in the way of aromas and flavors.

Caramel, gram cracker, citrus nose.

I can't tell if it's lightly hopped or if the beer has a mild infection. Light body, gram crackers for sure, some citrus notes. Not bitter, not really hoppy per say.

Nothing wrong with this, it's drinkable but given the alcohol and calories, why drink it?

FYI at 12 for a 4 pack the price is pretty awful for the end product.

Pours a a slight hazed yellow/orange color with a fresh thin white head. Smell is grain with citrus and white fruit hops . Taste follows the nose slight citrus hops with a grain and bread malt finish. Medium carbonation with light floral hops and very little bitterness. An unremarkable brew its drinkable but would not buy this one again.

L: Poured from a tallboy can to a pint glass. Had a bright amber color and a clear texture. There was a quarter inch of foamy head that lasted an average amount of time. Very good lacing.

S: A nice aroma of hops, some light malt, and some citrus. Standard APA aroma.

T: Tasted of a mild amount of citrus (orange, a little bit of lemon), a lot of hops (at least for an APA), some light pine notes, a floral quality, and some caramel. This flavor grew on me after awhile. It's light and generally well balanced. Not exactly a complex flavor, but pretty tasty nonetheless.

F: A highly carbonated beer with a lively, prickly finish. Light-bodied.

O: A Beer is a solidly made session beer. Definitely a light, sweet well done beer.
