A BeerA Beer
Notes: Walk up to the bar and what do you ask for? A Beer, naturally. It doesn't always matter what it is, or what you want in this case. You want something light? We've got A Beer for you. You want something hop forward? We've got A Beer for you. You just want to camp out on that bar stool and crush something? We've got ABeer for you. We're only marginally apologetic that it's not kettle soured with Mosaic & Amarillo hops. This is better. This is a straight forward, refreshing extra pale ale utilizing the newest varieties of German aroma hops (Hallertau Blanc & Mandarina Bavaria). Call it a session IPA if you need, call it a pale ale if you prefer, hell, it doesn't matter what you call it, what matters is that you stop talking about it and throw ABeer down yer gullet.

Had this on tap after a visit to Angel's Envy. This was the only brewery we hit in Louisville as the trip was all about the bourbon. This beer was had a yellowish tint to it. It had a slight bit of citrus and grapefruit. A little bit of hoppiness in the taste. It was pretty smooth. Not bad

Appearance: Pours a pale yellow and gives about 2 fingers of white foam. This dissipates but it leaves a bubbly film on top. Nice carbonation coming up in my glass. Some lacing.
Aroma: I get both malt and hops but more on the malt side. Slight pungency from the hops. Resinous.
Taste: While I smell more malt that hops when I taste it I get a good dose of piney hops right off the bat.
Mouth Feel: Medium feel with good carbonation. Bitterness hangs around a while.
Overall: I am not a HUGE lager fan but I like one once in a while. This is one I would have anytime. Tasty and refreshing.

16 oz. can poured into a nonic.

A- Hazy golden orange. Head is off white. Retention okay, but leaves some sticky lacing.
S- Citrus, pine, a little tropical. Light malty biscuit backbone.
T- Flavorful yet light. Piny citrus.
M- Body medium with a bit of an aftertaste. Yet still drinkable and pleasant.

L: Mostly clear with persistent thick creamy head. Buttery looking (which is good)

S: A little hoppier than your average lager, but the wholesome malt body shines through.

T: Pretty nice. Savory notes hit the whole palate. The aromatic hop blend profile is the star of the show. It's wonderful. A little bit of chest hair, not full growth, just peach fuzz. Distinct--I could pick this one out from a blind taste-test.

F: Slightly pungent and oily. Clean finish.

O: Worth my time.

Traded for this ages ago but I have no idea when as there wasn't anything stamped on the bottom of the can. Never had anything from Against The Grain before and based on the description on the can, this seemed like something basic that you'd reach for if you were thirsty. Sure enough, that was the case as this was a typical, textbook American Pale Ale with hardly anything memorable to take away from it during my session...

This poured a mild amber with some haze in it and enough head top it off, although it was uneven and settled quite rapidly. Very little lacing was left aside from something resembling a thin collar around the top of my pint glass. Lemon zest, honey, urine, and some hops in the nose as the taste was basic, balanced, and bitter like a German Pils or something of the like. Some dank Mosaic came through as this warmed up this this needed more carbonation and a brighter flavor, and neither were present here.

The same could be said for the alcohol but this *was* an American Pale Ale and I didn't expect this to be terribly strong. The description of this orders you to throw it "down yer gullet" and if you want something mindless, a bit skunky, and subtly dank, you've stumbled across the right brew with this one! Worth a go once when you just want a beer...

pint pull at ATG brewery and smokehouse. Nice beer. Good golden color. Not much head which quickly dissipates. A little bit more piney hops than normally found in lager but not over done. Good for this hot afternoon and would be great at the ballgame if Louisville were playing tonight.

The seCANd half of yesterday's Happy New Against the Saugatuck Grain Beer Sunday (Week 699) left me with several more CANs to be added to The CANQuest (tm). Once I CANplete their reviews & ratings, they will become an entry in the current WBAYDN thread.

From the CAN: "Brewer Owned"; "Extra American Pale Ale"; "Art & Layout by RobbyDavis.com"; "Come At Me Bro!"; "When you're looking for something hoppy, A Beer is here. When you want something light and refreshing, grab A Beer. When you're hung up on something local, go for A Beer. Or, if you just need one to the dome, crush A Beer. Whatever you need, we've got A Beer for you."; "You Mad Bro?"

I was only mad at myself for having incorrectly added this beer to the site's database & having to cop to my mistake to have it corrected. 8=( I took out my frustration by Crack!ing open this CAN & giving it a heavy-handed Glug. This resulted in two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with moderate retention. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, calling forth The Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon & Croesus for a taste. Nose was very grapefruit citrus with a biscuit malt backbone, very much reminiscent of a Session AIPA. Hmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very bitter, more towards grapefruit rind & pith without very much malt presence to balance it. The Notes are kind of vague about its style, but as an APA, it strikes me as too bitter. Finish was dry and bitter, but not all that refreshing. Meh.

This seems to be the most carbonated drink I’ve ever had and just seemed to taste like what regular old bud would taste like when said and done

20 oz Imperial Pint glass.
Pours thin, golden, with a very light haze.
Smells like an IPA, with a mellow orange-grapefruit aroma. Tastes like an APA, but for this low ABV, it has a lot of bang going for it. The hop is rather mild, the orange-grapefruit subdued, and there is a mild bready taste in the background. This drinks thick.. one of the thickest I've encountered. Low carbonation, low bitterness, and smooth throughout.

I've had this beer in multiple sessions 3 times now. All 3 times, I've had the same vibe.. a very good APA with lots of flavors that don't disappoint, or make my nose twitch. The rising cost of this beer, keeps it from being my go-to beer.

i like a beer like this in that its real substantial and sort of big in body but also dry and low alcohol at the same time, it almost defies conventional logic, and while its not necessarily a session beer in the classic sense, its real easy drinking if you are a beer person, and its a good pale. dry and hoppy but easy too, i really dig it. that said, i also wish for more than just the body and the bitter, the hops need their full dimensionalism, and its not here. for how light this is supposed to be, a pint can on a lunch belly is also a little hard to finish, so thats a factor too. hops are great and they are fresh, but its kind of underdone, like a conservative approach to an absurd recipe or something, like its too much of not enough, if thats coherent... the body feels heavy to me too, like, it doesnt get where its trying to go, and as much as i drink this fast, it leaves me weighty and not stoked. i dont know, its fine, but its another sort of forced thing from these guys that just doesnt resonate with me. like, if the guy on the can was a real person he would be a fratty wannabe who id rather walk away from then attempt to dialogue with, and thats this beer in a nutshell...

Caramel, gram cracker, citrus nose.

I can't tell if it's lightly hopped or if the beer has a mild infection. Light body, gram crackers for sure, some citrus notes. Not bitter, not really hoppy per say.

Nothing wrong with this, it's drinkable but given the alcohol and calories, why drink it?

FYI at 12 for a 4 pack the price is pretty awful for the end product.
