The beaten path of lager leads to the doorstep of Against the Grain in a rendition of the German pilsner-style lager. Its familiar flavors are well executed and represented however at the risk of boredom.

Pussilanimous pours with a tepidly capped pale straw hue, lightly hazed with scant lacing or retention. Musty grain aromatic lurk behind a bright and floral hop scent. From honeysuckle to damp grass, the nose is mildly bready and doughy. Partly of fresh-kilned grain and partly of baking bread, the early sweetness is crackery and lightly confectionary.

Trailing sweetness allows for the shift to hop flavors, but also a raw grain character that leaves the palate cereal-like and dryly of bread. Spicy, herbal and grassy, the beer's hoppy finish carries a peppery bite along with a vegetal grain and hop bite with a plaster-like taste to assist in dryness.

Medium-light in body, the beer's dryness keeps the session drinkable, semi-smooth and refreshing, but also allows the mustiness of damp grains, stale bread, vegetative astringency and iron-like nuance to become too much of the flavor profile to celebrate at any high degree. It's a least-common-denominator craft beer for that friend who whimps out on Against the Grain's finer options.
