Crisp, clean and readily shelf-stable, there was once a time when "clear" beer was a sign of quality. What's clear is that we were pretty dumb back then. Unfiltered, fully flavored and unabashed- that's how brewers like Against the Grain now roll into their IPA.

Pouring a reasonably unfiltered hazy amber, Clearly Everybody Wants Some (Hazy Boi IPA) is off-turbid in its translucence, crowning with an eggshell froth. Pineapple aromas rise with a caramelized malt scent. Citrus and other tropical fruits round the nose while its taste links up with a toasted caramel, granola-like sweetness.

The undertow of caramelization holds firm across the middle palate while the hops expand and capture the tastebud's attention with over-ripened fruits of pineapple, mango, nectarine and apricot. Lighter flavors of grapefruit and orange add a racy flavor that extends into a sharply bitter finish with spruce resins, peppery grasses and fresh pine.

Medium full, the beer's robust grain character carries weighted character with a gin-like spice and a botanical finish. An aftertaste of muddled fruit rinds and pine creates a hodge-podge of old school Midwestern IPA and the more floral New England styled ones. It's a nice beer that allows its persistent, somewhat stale malts to detract too much from the hops.
