Pours a hazy dark brown with caramel highlights and a thin cappuccino head that lingers a ring around the rim.

Roasty chocolate malt dominates the aroma, with smoky highlights and booze adding complexity. Notes of caramel and dark fruit surface late.

Flavor reveals more booze and peaty malt, with heavy tones of chocolate, cola, and burnt toast accompanying prune, raisin, and bruised cherry notes. All play well with the smoky background.

Body is moderate to full, with carbonation leaning on the lighter side. Alcohol warmth is fairly strong.

Overall, a good offering by atg. Lots of character, perhaps overly smoky for some, and a bit hot. But definitely with a try. I'd have another.

$16.50/growler due to high gravity...

From the site:

"You'd be red too, if you lost your mock

ABV: 8.70% IBUs: 26.60 O.G.: 20.00°

Strong Scotch ale brewed with Lactose. We start with pale ale, Munich, brown and caramel malts. Then we pump a barrel to the kettle and burn it until it caramelizes. Then we top it off with another 15 bbls of liquid boil it and add lactose (milk sugar) for even more body and sweetness. The result is a sweet and super complex ale like nothing we've had before."

A - Murky, dark mahogany in color with a tan head and lots of spotty lacing.

S - Quite odd at first. Caramel/toffee with a sweet, earthy aroma in the background. Something is hard to pinpoint... there's some slight wood and raw coffee bean.

T - Following the nose, but different... Some butterscotch... It's interesting for a "big beer"; it's complex and compelling for a beer geek. Caramelized and lactose sugar playing together on a smoky, wooded playground. Bits of vanilla here and there. Nice, smoky aftertaste.

M - Medium to full bodied with creamy and velvety mouth-feel for an 8.7%... No alcohol burn. Very pleasant for the higher ABV.

O - MMMmmm... Lactose scotch... a first for me. It's interesting how it reminds me a lot of Founder's scotch ales/wee heavies. ATG is my go-to place for growlers due to their innovative takes on classic styles. Another good job, guys. I'd like to see an BA version one day; however, Angel's Envy might not work well with this one.
