Notes: An India Pale Ale featuring Nelson Sauvin hops. Named after the Sauvignon Blanc grape, is a variety of hop developed and grown in New Zealand. It has a strong fruity flavor and aroma that is described as resembling white wine, or fresh crushed grapes or gooseberries. Some reviewers of this hop perceive the fruitiness as being very tropical with descriptions including passion fruit, tangerines, and grapefruit. These hops are organic and are about 4 times as expensive as our normal American varieties.

I was super excited to see this available in cans now because about a year or so ago I got a 22 ounce bomber and I had been searching for it ever since.

Unfortunately, the move from bottle to can doesn't seem to have done the beer the best service.

In the bottled form, the sauvignon hops really popped out and gave the beer a nice, floral hoppiness that really was outstanding.

In the canned version, everything is flatter and not as pronounced.

I took half of the beer from the can and drinking it from the can seems to have helped the beer a little bit, but when I poured some in a glass to see how that helped the beer...it didn't.

The beer still has a nice mouth feel and is sprite, but I wouldn't necessarily pick it over other DIPAs that you might regularly find. Especially at the price point that I purchased it at.

Fruity, Hoppy, Malty, Macho

Honey amber in color with a massive creamy head. Fruity on the nose with pine and candied citrus. This is a creamy beer with a dry, semi-astringent hoppy bite beneath. A malty sweetness and notes of caramel coat the palate with some balance. Fruity suggestions of wine grapes, oranges, berries, notes of grapefruit and a citric edge smooth into a bready finish with some lingering alcohol and a coarse, oily bitterness that sticks around. With its focus on Nelson Sauvin hops, Rico Sauvin is a macho Double IPA that makes you want to don a bandana, bare your chest and learn Spanglish.

Appearance fits the bill for a DIPA with a dark grapefruit juice color. Not so much cloudy as it is hazy. A golden white color if there is such a thing. Opaque. Thin white head, but not much retention. Thick gooey froth with a tiny bit of lacing.

This beer has an unusual scent, which I'll chalk up to the hops. It's very wine-like, like a white wine and grapefruit combo. Very tropical and fruity. There's a musky feel to the nose. I'm not familiar with this hop variety, but it's unique.

The taste is very nice for such a strange smelling beer. It has the characteristics of a classic IPA, though some hints of green grapes and/or wine. Slight alcohol taste in the finish.

It feels heavy for a lightish colored beer, even for a double. A tartness emerges quickly before an intensifying bitter feel evolves. While no real carbonation presents, it's got the carbonated bite in the finish that exaggerates the tart feeling and snap from the alcohol.

This is a nice DIPA because it's a bit unusual. The addition of the strange hops is a nice add on to make it stand out from other pale ales.

Picked up a fresh bottle at Astoria Bier & Cheese. Same graphics and name, but the ABV is up to 8.2% and it's calling itself a double IPA — and it's a lovely one at that. The sharp, dank tangerine is up front and the finish is biting and spicy cracked pepper. The body is a well balanced, as in not too dry or thick, it supports the big hop flavors. Great beer.

This was my first all Nelson beer and I knew it was going to be good. Rico was my first ATG beer and there will be many more to come!

A - Very nice pale orange color with a rocky white head that sticks around. Good lacing. Mostly clear with some dry hop haze.

S - Great hoppy fragrance with a tropical fruit character that shines through. Has citrus, dank, and some resin hop character also. Slight malt character but fresh hops throughout the nose.

T - Initially it hits with a nice pale ale sweetness that is a tutti-fruity character along with citrus and sweet malt. The tropical fruit character is difficult to pin down to one type of fruit but is more like a tropical fruit smoothie tone. In the middle there is a big bready, malt, and cracker flavor that is just as big as the hops. Nice smooth finish with a mild bitterness from the hops. The last flavors on the palate are the sweet bread and tropical fruit.

M - Medium to light mouth-feel. Pretty balanced with the sweet malt to go with the hop resin. Moderate carbonation.

Overall, this is a very balanced and fruit forward IPA. It's a great beer that has all of the Sauvin hops you can sink your teeth into. The more mild bitterness and soft sweet character make this more drinkable than some IPAs out there. Perfect if you don't like overly bitter IPA's but would like a more hops. I look forward to trying this again in the future.

Received as an extra in a trade and poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice almost crystal clear orange golden hue with a nice two finger white head that faded to a one finger blanket and leave a loads of sticky side lacing. Very, very nice here.

S - Aromas of a musty grape note, some citrus and tropical notes, faint caramel, crackery bread. Not getting much in the realm of passion fruit but the alcohol is hidden nicely. Actually, once it warms up some good swirls reveal subtle passion fruit.

T - Taste is like the nose, very nice musty grape and white wine notes, good tangerine citrus and zest, light tropical, no real malt sweetness at all. Great bitterness, no real alcohol burn at all. Quite flavourful here, a lot fresher than I had figured it would be.

M - Mouthfeel is solid here as well alcohol hidden completely, nice light carbonation.

O - Overall, this was a very nice IPA offering from Against The Grain. The price makes it a bit daunting, but, if one can find a fresh bottle (there is no bottle date though) it's a winner.

16 oz. can poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

Dark orange color with a decent head that leaves nice lacing. Smells of sweet fruits and white grapes. Taste follows the nose. On the sweet side with building, lingering bitterness as you make your way through each swallow. Different than most other IPAs. Glad I got to try but would have to be in the mood to have again. A tad too sweet for my taste.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, best before 7/14/2019. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy medium golden amber color with a 1 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big pineapple, tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, gooseberry, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread dough, light honey, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big pineapple, tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, gooseberry, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread dough, light honey, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, woody, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of pineapple, tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, gooseberry, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread dough, light honey, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no hop astringency lingering after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.2%. Overall this is a delicious DIPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV, with the mellowly bitter/resinous/drying finish; not aggressive. Great Nelson Sauvin showcase as expected. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a nice balanced bready malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example. Not overly sweet/heavy for the ABV.

Look - Murky, much sediment. Looks like pulpy orange juice. Medium, white head with aggressive pour. Lacing for days.

Smell - Grapefruit. Pine. Resin. Tropical and dank.

Taste - It is lighter than I was hoping after smell, look, and ABV. Orange. Grapefruit. Pine. Bitter.

Feel - Light to medium. Carbonation heavy but not a bomb. Sticks to the tongue.

Overall - This is not an overly citrus IPA. Good stuff. Not something I will write home about, but something I will drink again.
