Notes: Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

Poured into tulip glass from 16oz can.

Deep brown pitch with fb of off white foam, moderate effervescence and good lacing.
Smell is somewhat muted, roasted malts, dark fruit, hint of cocoa. Tastes sweet malts forward, some toffee, cocoa, molasses and transitions to mild bitter sweetness before leaving a nice clean finish. Mouthfeel is milky smooth, medium bodied with good carbonation to balance the sweet notes and provide some astringency.

Overall, this is a solid milk stout - malt notes predominate, abv is well hidden, and the beer is highly quaffable and quite good. I really enjoy the art work, its provocative and interesting and mirrors the complexity of this beer. I'm looking forward to tracking down more of their beers.

And its with a straight-down-the-middle approach that Against the Grain brews a spot-on English-style milk stout without deviating from the path. For a brewery that prides themselves on making beers of creativity and innovation, they didn't AtG this dark ale up too much.

Like many stouts, 35K pours with a dark, bark brown hue with just enough haze to prevent an onyx-like sheen. Firmly headed with a blanket of lightly tanned foam, the beer retains well and laces lightly on the glass. Its the classy milk stout look.

Malty aromas of dark roast coffee, cocoa, and burnt toffee evokes impressions of coffee as much as beer. Roasted walnuts, starchy malted milk, and mild grass and wood emit from the glass as the beer warms and the nose becomes accustomed to the scent.

Rich and savory flavors of French-press coffee offers a genuine robust taste without the elements of smoke or ash. The coffee flavor weaves into the bittersweet chocolate flavors and is reminiscent of chocolate milk and "Whoppers" candies. Aided by a starchy malt foundation, the residual sweetness and lightly scorched toffee only adds to the succulent taste. Balanced lightly by woodish hops, the broad and earthen bitterness rises moderately in finish and signals closure. An aftertaste of walnut brownies linger robustly on the palate much like dark coffee.

Medium-full in body throughout, its the light carbonation that allows the malt to press firmly on the tongue, giving the impression of weight. Couple that with the the added milk sugars and the beer takes on dessert-like proportions. But the beer remains smooth, silky, and drinkable without wavering until the hop dryness, pronounced alcohol warmth, and fleeting malt density to carry the beer through the gullet.

It seems that I'm quick to detract their more experimental beers because of the unusualness of their creative spirits and the unsettled palate that's then created. Though they didn't go "against the grain" here, I kinda miss the game of "what's new" in this glass. Perhaps I just need to turn the brain off and simply drink the damn beer!

Sampled last night on 2/24/16. Comes in a 16-ounce can. Can chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a "It's 5:00 Somewhere" pint glass.

Brew pours very close to a pitch-black in color with a good 1-finger creamy beige head. LOTS of lacing was seen when sipped that stayed in place. Aroma is of dark roasted malts, nutty with a hint of dark fruit. Taste has more going on that the aroma suggests with a hint of chocolate and a light hint of coffee even. VERY smooth, creamy and goes down easy. A light hint of bitterness for the finish but nothing to worry about at all. Medium-bodied with medium carbonation as well. Overall, a very tasty brew with some cool artwork.

Something a tad artificial in the taste that I tried to get past, and only at times could. A bit overly carbonated, which makes it look too foamy, though that didn't stop it from having a nice creamy mouthfeel.

A: Poured into a nonic pint to a deep black topped by a dense two finger light tan head that retains well and leaves decent lacing
S: Smells of milk chocolate sweetness with some roasted malts and a hint of coffee
T: Taste is milk chocolate with some light coffee and roasted malts with some slight hints of smoky wood. A little meaty in some places too. Swallow is more milk chocolate sweetness with some lingering roasted notes and slight coffee
M: This beer is on the heavier side of medium with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is a little too high for my liking but it keeps things moving across the palate. The beer has a slightly drying finish.
O: Overall this is a really solid milk stout. It has some good flavors and complexity but it definitely is on the sweet side of things. Worth a try if you can find it though.
