Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

$ 4.76 (Including tax)/16 oz can ($ 0.297/Oz) from Oppermann’s, Saginaw, MI.
Undated can stored at 43 degrees (Hotel reefer temperature). Served at 48 degrees (per can instructions) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – initially none. As the head retracts some chocolate and weak roasted malt appear. No coffee.
Head large (maximum five cm, aggressive pour), tan, medium density froth, below average retention, diminishing to an irregular four to five mm ring and thin layer with some rocky islands.
Lacing – below average – narrow ring of tiny bubbles
Body – dark brown/black, opaque. As the level in the glass drops to where I can see down through it, it is chestnut brown and clear.
Flavor – a little chocolate, a little roasted malt, no coffee. Actually just sweet enough to offset any roasted malt bitterness. Flavors are well balanced – nothing pushes to the front. No alcohol, no hops, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, creamy, soft carbonation.

One of the better milk stouts I’ve had – well balanced and not too sweet.

Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3.5, Flavor 4.25, Palate 4, Overall 4.25.

Appearance: Pours with one of the better bubble shows I have seen in a while and once the tan head settles in, there are three fingers of foam atop the fudge brown liquid; tawny and ruby highlights on the edge of the liquid; decent lacing action, too

Smell: Dark chocolate, almost reminiscent of Hershey's powder and Baker's chocolate; hints of coffee, walnut and brown bread

Taste: The chocolate flavors dominate the front end, with a chalky bitterness more so than the expected lactose cream flavor; coffee, walnuts and toasted brown bread; earthy and slightly piney bitterness, after the swallow, but the finish is a return to the start

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; doesn't have an anticipated creamy character

Overall: Well, the look was great and the aroma was enticing, but the taste and the mouthfeel just didn't live up to the anticipation

From a 16oz can, dated 01/08/18. Being as that's ten-and-a-half months from now, I'm going to call that a 'best by' date so, probably, a month-and-a-half old. Anyway. Served in a nonic.

Pours a handsome chestnut-black with a boundless, rocky head of mocha suds. Retention is good for five minutes before settling back to a solid, foamy cap with sparse spots of lacing.

Smells of coffee, molasses and copper. Roasted, toasted grains.

Taste is sweet, toasted, oaty cereal, milk chocolate and a little cherry, a little smoke. Weirdly-but-not-unpleasantly, I taste lettuce. Finishes sweetly but not stickily with a slightly metallic, mineral tang, cold coffee grinds and chalk.

Mouthfeel is clean and bright, medium-light body for the style and amply carbonated.

Overall, a tasty beverage although the metallic smell and taste was odd. Was I tasting the can? It wasn't unpleasant but it doesn't seem like something a brewer would put in on purpose.
