Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

Pours pitch black with a decently sized tan head. Retention is so-so and lace doesn't remain.
Smell is toasty malts, baking chocolate, some oatmeal, hint of coffee.
Taste is more pronounced with notes dark chocolate, toasted malt, light coffee, molasses, a whiff of rum and a general sweetness that offsets the char. Great balance overall.
Body is approaching full, finish is drying. Effervescence is non-intrusive as it should be. Smooth and creamy. Extremely good, I look forward to others from this brewer.

Pours a dark brown to black color with less than a finger of head. The nose is solidly roasty. This offering is smooth and drinkable but the mouthfeel is not quite creamy. There is a solid roast throughout the flavor profile and the body is spot on for the style.

16oz can, no date but 2 pink paint dots on the bottom, 7% ABV. Pours black with an average sized khaki head; lots of carbonation bubbles. Smells of roasted malt, fresh and earthy hops, cocoa, coffee, and sweet lactose. The taste follows exactly with mostly roasted malt and earthy hops with some cocoa, coffee, and lactose; good intensity. Light bitterness and some mild sweetness. Fairly thin body and higher carbonation, but drinkable. Overall, the flavor balance and intensity surprised me on this one. The hops brighten up the beer without taking over the roasted profile. Could use a better mouthfeel and some more lactose to better fit the style, but well done nonetheless.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thick rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, vanilla, earth, char, and lactose aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, milk chocolate, brewed coffee, cream, earth, and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a solid mix of cocoa, coffee, cream, and roast characteristics that work nicely together all around.

Serving type: can.

A - Dark body, black and opaque, with a big billowing tan head that fades pretty quickly, leaves a lots of lacing.

S - A lovely hit of malt, chocolate and dark breads, molasses and toffee.

T - Following that nose, with a deep malty dough flavor, full of bread, molasses and caramel. A chocolate hint in the front, and a ghost of coffee bitter acidity in the close.

M - A sticky full feel, but just enough acidity in the close to keep it from being cloying.

O - This is a beautiful beer, very refined and full flavor, depth in the malts offering many of the great milk stout elements without blowing the taste buds out with either sweetness or bitter notes. This is one I'll pick up again, and not just in a mix-six.

16 oz can, w/o freshness/canning date info

Pours basic black, quickly departing mocha head goes to minor to next to no head/film/lace

Roasty nose, with coffee grinds coming to mind.

Tasty Brit style stout, more roasted coffee grinds, dark malts and dark bread toast.

Carbonation on the low side, medium bodied

Flavorful stout, worth a try.
