Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

Pours about as brown as you can get without actually being black. It has a moderate amount of light tan head that melts off quickly. The aroma has some nice chocolate malt, a little cocoa, and hints of lactose sweetness. Not very strong but nicely balanced. The taste takes the aroma up a notch, combining all those qualities into a delicious quaff. The body is lighter but not weak, almost completely smooth with just a hint of carbonation.

Pours very dark in color producing a moderate head. I found the aroma to be subtle. Clear sweet and chocolate notes and a surprisingly light mouthfeel.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's a solid inch of densely packed brown head resting on top. Aroma is of malted milk balls. The taste is definitely plenty sweet with sweet lactose and chocolate. It finishes with a faint dark malt bitterness. The mouth is very light and viscous.

Poured into stout glass. It pours a deep mahogany with a one-finger khaki-colored head and lacing. It smells of roasted malts, cocoa, caramel, and a whiff of dark fruit. The taste follows the nose but with more chocolate and less fruit. There is also more coffee in the taste than the smell. At the finish, there is a somewhat odd metallic taste. This stout is creamy, medium-bodied and moderately carbonated. With a manageable ABV of 7%, it is quite easy to drink. Overall, I was rather disappointed with the taste. It's not bad but it pales in comparison to some well-known examples of this style, including Left Hand and Xocoveza.

Terrific American stout. Almost black in color. Subtle smell. Complex taste with lots of coffee and chocolate undertones. Balanced just slightly more to the hoppy side of the spectrum. Excellent!

Poured into tulip glass from 16oz can.

Deep brown pitch with fb of off white foam, moderate effervescence and good lacing.
Smell is somewhat muted, roasted malts, dark fruit, hint of cocoa. Tastes sweet malts forward, some toffee, cocoa, molasses and transitions to mild bitter sweetness before leaving a nice clean finish. Mouthfeel is milky smooth, medium bodied with good carbonation to balance the sweet notes and provide some astringency.

Overall, this is a solid milk stout - malt notes predominate, abv is well hidden, and the beer is highly quaffable and quite good. I really enjoy the art work, its provocative and interesting and mirrors the complexity of this beer. I'm looking forward to tracking down more of their beers.

Poured from a 16oz. can to a Rogue stout glass.

L - pours jet black with a 1.5" beige head that recedes into a 1/4" layer over the top leaving good amount of lacing as it fades.

S - very clean in the beginning with some notes of nuts and almonds and lactose lurking in the shadows.

T - the taste was the biggest let down, more on the bitter end of the spectrum as opposed to the sweet side where it should be at. Asides from a chocolatey roastiness there's not much more to be picked here.

F - medium to full bodied. Satisfying in the front but missing a big gap at the end of the palate. Goes down as if you never had anything to begin with.

O - seems well built, just wished it had a bit more going on flavorwise. It's almost as if I could pound this by the can.

Very sweet, almost too much, definitely a dessert beer. Solid.
