Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Russian River pint glass.

A: Very dark brown, nearly opaque, with a thick dense foamy head. Not much visible carbonation.

S: Roasted malts, burnt coffee and chocolate and dry cocoa powder. All of this is backed by a somewhat bland hop bitterness. Decent, not exciting.

T: Chocolate - almost like a dry hot chocolate mix powder. Then roasted malts, a touch of dry instant coffee, then roasted malt and hop bitterness into the hang.

M: Average body for an American stout, so long as you keep in mind that it isn't an Imperial version. Medium carbonation sensation, low alcohol presence.

O: This is a tasty, drinkable stout - one you could have with dinner or dessert. Not particularly complex but an easy drinker.

16 oz can. It poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma was of roasted malts, some coffee and dark chocolate. The taste was similar to the aroma with brown sugar, licorice and somewhat dry and roasty. Very Tasty.

Cascading (upward) dark beige head--four fingers when finished. Dark brown liquid, naturally, where I get just a touch of a very bright light to pass. The head dies out quickly and leaves a network of spots on the glass. The bubbles remain throughout the tasting in a thin layer on top of the liquid.

I get chalk, burnt sugar, and milk on the first smell. There's some cardboard way in the back of the nose.

Mildly sweet with bitter black patent malt flavors. Think whole milk with coffee added. The body is extremely smooth--a bit richer than average--certainly thicker than most stouts. The carbonation is muted be very present. The swallow produces a cocoa flavor I hadn't found before. The aftertaste is more of the coffee flavored milk, with an additional bitterness that is probably hop induced.

I like the overall complexity and full body. Very worthy for a try.

Can from ABV.

Pouring black with a dense, brown head with decent retention and lacing, this looks solid. The nose is a nice blend of roast, a little cream, darker-than-milk chocolate, a creamy coffee note and a little honey. This really does have a ton of creamy, milky notes. The palate opens with a blend of cream, creamy coffee, milk chocolate as well as a touch of smoke. A pleasing, grainy bitterness from roasted grain is present on the mid-palate, tempering the creaminess and moderate sweetness that's present. This bitterness lingers on into the finish, where some sweetness (creamy coffee, a little chocolate) reappear. Medium in body, moderately carbonated, this beer is quite solid.
