Style: American Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This big barleywine is malty and chewy as well as packed full of aromatic and flavorful New Zealand hops. Over a ton of malt went into the mash on this beast. Pale malt forms the base and additions of wheat, Victory malt, and British caramel malt give a complex character that comes through as toffee, caramel, and dark fruits. A blend of Pacific Gem, Topaz, Wakatu, Motueka, and Nelson Sauvin hops lend notes of vanilla, tropical fruits, earthy spice, and citrus. There's a lot going on here, just like in the Lord of the Rings.

Enjoyed this beer at the Against the Grain Brewery on tap in a 12oz snifter.

A - Pours a reddish brown with a touch of purple, pencil thickness of white head, lacing to high beer mark, light barley gets thru this brew.

S - Cherry, strawberry, bubble gum, purple grape, and certainly hoppy

T - Starts with sweetness but immediately shifts into a hoppy bitterness (8.5/10) with rye. Finish is very potent - but its a red port wine booze, so its not overwhelming booze, with a bitter hop/port wine linger

M - Frothy, high viscosity, full bodied and thick

O - Super hoppy, one of those American barely wines that could certainly be confused with a IIPA if not for the wine flavor. downfall would be that the booze isn't hidden real well.

Growler fill from Green's Piney Grove, poured into a Stone Old Guardian Barleywine glass.

A: Auburn body; pours a creamy, one-finger head that recedes to wisps and a ring around the edges. Lots of spotty lacing all over the glass.

S: A bit dank; a hint of tropical fruit, mahogany, white wine. A really strong hop aroma on this.

T: The hops hit hard up front, but not too bitterly. A little mango, a little resin, and the Nelson Sauvin really show itself. This is a balanced beer, but the malt doesn't really stand out beyond a bit of caramel sweetness. The finish is long and bitter. No alcohol taste, though it is warming when swallowed.

M: Medium body, not at all heavy for a barleywine. Just enough carbonation, but not all syrupy.

O: A nice example of the American barleywine style, and it really puts the New Zealand hops on display. I'd like more of a showing from the malt bill, but as hoppy barleywines go, this is a winner.
