Notes: This is essentially the 35K recipe doubled. Double roasty, double chocolatey, double creamy, double delicious. Then we decided to make it 2.5X awesome by aging it in bourbon barrels for a really, really long time. The bourbon and oak flavors perfectly compliment the massive flavors in the double mega imperial milk stout. You don’t swim in this beer, it swims in you!

Pours an effervescent mahogany with a thumb of caramel head. Dissapointing head retention & lacing

S: Some Bourbon, a little ghost booze & figs, plus dark cherry

T: Barrel, but seems more like red wine, dryness, dark fruit, a touch of leathery dryness & a little dark chococlate up front. Some smokiness, , figs, leafy hops, a little red wine barrel & leathery dryness as this warms, plus a little raisin. Finishes oaky, red-winey, with little fig, black cherry & a little Bourbon on the edges

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, warming

Pretty good, but not + $1 an ounce good. Glad I got to try it

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Appearance: Pours almost pitch black with a one finger tan head which fades; leggy, with some spots left behind

Smell: Milk chocolate, marshmallow and vanilla cream, enveloped in a cloak of Bourbon aromatics

Taste: Milk chocolate covered marshmallows in liquid form, with the sweetened vanilla tone building; through the middle, the Bourbon adds another dimension, cutting the sweetness ever so slightly; the blend of the chocolate confection and the Bourbon linger in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: A very sweet stout and, while it is well-crafted for what it is, this is clearly a dessert beer to enjoy in limited quantity - bottling this in a 750 makes no sense to me

From the brewery that hangs their hat on variety- here comes a mind-blowing bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout that showcases the taste of bourbon soaked woods and underlying complex dark flavors. This all means that this review may become a bit long-winded.

But like many of these barrel aged rich stouts, 70k pours the expected viscous textured, onyx-black color with a certain mirror-like sheen. A short statured but frothy creme of foam builds on the surface and slowly recedes back into the beer, succumbing to its own viscosity, alcohol and tannin.

Incredibly aromatic, the beer delivers a strong presence of fudge chocolates, espresso, bourbon aging house, and secondary complements of port wine, sherry, burnt fruit and savory almost meaty notes. Its turn to taste leads to a coat upon the mouth of rich black strap molasses, fudge, espresso, and port- all sweet and roasty character weaves together brilliantly as not to stratify from early to mid to late palate- its a homogeneous taste from sip 'til finish. But as the ale warms and the palate acclimates, savory tastes of burnt currant, savory notes of oak, vanilla, and melanoidin.

Full, lush, and velvety- the beer is verbose in texture but is also silky and smooth. As the ale coats the mouth, its taste seeps into the mouth tissues to overwhelm the senses with sheer delight. Built for the sweet tooths, this ale is robust and grows with alcohol warmth for a malty-dry finish with lingering chocolaty sweetness.

750 ml bottle, no dating on it that I noticed. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that stuck around a little while. Not much lacing at all. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, roasted malt, coffee, and dark fruit. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, with bourbon, vanilla, bittersweet and milk chocolate, roasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, oak/woody and coffee flavors. Sweetness gets a little stronger as the beer warms, but isn't overpowering. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's smooth and a bit slick with a lower to moderate amount of carbonation. Easy enough to drink for being 13% ABV. I thought this was a pretty good barrel aged imperial stout, I tried this before on tap a couple years ago and it's just as good as I remember. Definitely worth picking up! $16.99 a bottle.

From the growler via Party Town in Kentucky and enjoyed in a snifter.
This kickin' stout pours a rich obsidian with a lovely head of medium brown
foam that subsides to a thick ring, thin layer, and displays some excellent
sudsy lacing. Nose of boozy bourbon, vanilla, woodsy oak, sweet cream,
deep roasted malts, and char touched marshmallow. Flavors nail it
on the WOW scale and follow with bourbon and sweet cream that isn't
so sweet that it takes on an "off" character, showing balance against an
onslaught of roasted malts showing flavors fudge, coffee, and rich
roast and char. Oaken and vanilla notes gain strength with warmth--
outstanding! Excellent mouth feel; full body, slick, coating, warming,
meaty, beaty, big, and bouncy. Low carbonation that is just enough to
give this behemoth some lift, and a warming sweet finish.

All in all---WOW. Period.

22 dollars a growler---need to make note of this more often.

Cheers

I have to disagree with @macher0 on one thing: I don't think this is as complex or as well rounded as Bo and Luke. The latter obviously has smoke characteristics, but the bourbon also comes through strong. I thought this batch of 70K was hotter and had more of a cognac aftertaste than the smooth follow-through that bourbon barrels produce. I preferred last year's batch way more, personally.

Still a damn good beer.

Bomber to snifter. Look is opaque black with ruby highlights, thin chocolate head. Smell is piles of bourbon barrel, oak and caramel and sharp tannins. Taste is dominated by that oaky bourbon essence, with raisins and stone fruit at the end. There is a bit of a bitter element that also comes late grabs the side of the tongue, and I kinda like it. Feel is very thick and slick, and very sweet. Carb is good for the style. Sometimes these drink a bit flat. Borders on cloying, but the booze comes in to keep the balance. The ABV isn't exactly hidden, but this drinks like a 9, not a 13. Overall, a brilliant BBA imperial stout. I haven't had many of the whale stouts, but this is as good as any I've had

On tap at Avenue Pub. Smell is milky and sweet. Taste is strong and bitter on the front with a bourbon bite. Taste doesn't stay with you for long after. Surprisingly smooth 13% abv beer. Like it a lot

L: dark midnight black. Nice head that goes away quick.

S: strong bourbon right out the gate. Subtle chocolate.

T: wow. This is really good. Bourbon melts in with the beer perfect. Sweet milk stout mellows everything out. Sweet chocolate at the end. Very very good

F: nice and smooth. Lingering flavor makes you want more.

O: this is a great beer. I would love to have more of this.

A 750ml tightly foiled bottle, with no bottled on or best before date. Poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: Black in colour with a thin half finger brown head that dissipated fairly quickly but left nice spotty lacing.

Aroma: Dark roasty malt, chocolate, bourbon, molasses, oak, vanilla, boozy.

Taste: Sweet, light roast, bourbon, molasses, brown sugar, chocolate, oak, vanilla, marshmallow, with dried dark fruit and boozy notes.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall: A very nice sipper with the sweetness balanced by good roast and chocolate notes.

Pours a pitch black viscous liquid. There is a nice thin light tan head that forms and sticks around for a bit.

Aroma starts off light sweet fudgy chocolate syrup with some nice whiskey molasses. Chocolaty powder notes mix well with a nice slight burn from the barrel. Some slight lactose is detected in the aroma seems promising.

Now for the flavor. I’m pretty impressed. Starts off with smooth velvety chocolate fudge. Awesome whisky notes follow. Sweet barrel notes with some molasses and vanilla notes and spice. There is a mild whiskey burn but it’s not intense. The malt sweetness and whiskey sweetness blend so well together. The body is nice and rich with a medium fullness that allows for more. The abv isn’t too noticeable except for the buzz. There is some semblance of the milk stout base beer with some slight lactic sweetness and flavors but these play a slight second to the coca and barrel sweetness.

Overall this was a nice gem at AtG.

Served as a (bunch of) two oz pours at EBF 2016. Pour is oily black with a creamy mocha head leaving the characteristic yellow sheen of a great Imperial stout. Nose is chocolate and vanilla and brandy-like with a very clean alcohol aroma. Taste is wonderfully balanced with notes of coffee and bourbon. Mouthfeel is heavy and velvety smooth, fills the mouth and goes down clean. This was my favorite beer of the fest. Reminded me of the biggest of the whale stouts but with a clean lightness that would make a big serving totally satisfying.
