February 23rd, 2016 - Back Home is almost more root beer than beer, with heavy notes of sassafras and licorice on the nose. And since I'm drinking straight from the can today, the lack of visual stimuli can make for a convincing, luxury root beer soda. The flavor leans more towards the intended Christmas gingerbread taste, with some herbal touches and a mild sweetness, but still characterized by the herbal tastes of a top shelf rot beer.

You gotta like ginger if you go for this one. Great balance on ginger, but again if you don't like ginger..... Somewhat sweet, but it is an imperial!

Back Home - Golden Road
Gingerbread Stout - 8.5% abv
Canned on 9/29/2017
Purchased for $3.99 at Monde Market

L - 1-finger hazelnut head recedes fully in about a minute. Body is very dark brown. Close to black.

S - cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger.

T - christmas spice overload. The cloves are dominant. Ginger is there too but takes a back seat.

F - medium body and carb.

O - A decent holiday brew, but comes off as more of a winter warmer than a stout. Not getting any chocolate, roast, etc that would make this more stout-like. Greatly prefer Hardywood's version.

Cola colored with a big, airy, tan head.

Huge aroma of ginger. Maybe some nutmeg, spruce, all spice. Intense spicing here.

The taste is light smooth malt with another huge blast of ginger and spices. They almost burn the back of the throat. There's a very slight hop bitterness on the backend, but otherwise a lightly sweet, with an almost Christmas cake thing going in aftertaste along with lingering ginger spices.

Light to medium bodied with good carbonation.

The ginger may be strong for some, but they do a great job of getting cakey malt notes in there, too. Not a bad gimmicky beer.

(Review written a couple of months after drinking)
Got a 4-pack, 16 oz, on sale at TWACP, for $5.

It was good, yet it was a little too spicy or me. I gave the rest to a friend that really liked it,.

Absurdly sweet which is okay because I love cookies and this tastes like I'm drinking one. Dessert beer for sure.

16 ounce can into snifter, canned on 9/28/2016. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, anise, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, chocolate, cocoa, toasted brown bread, light coffee/molasses, and herbal/roast/toasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good complexity and solid balance of dark/roast/bready malt and spice notes; with great strength. Pretty strong on the spices in the aromas, but not too overwhelming. Taste of huge ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, anise, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, chocolate, cocoa, toasted brown bread, light coffee/molasses, and herbal/roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/spice and roast bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, anise, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, chocolate, cocoa, toasted brown bread, and herbal/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and spice flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, lightly sticky, and slightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is a very good spiced imperial stout. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and spice flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Powerful spice aromas, but more balanced in the taste. This is still very perfumey/vibrant on spices either way. A very unique, but very enjoyable offering.

This is a very good Ginger Bread stout that I got via a beer trade. It is a lot of ginger bread flavor in this one, like a ginger bread house in a bottle, with the frosting. I thought it was good.

Look: black with a half-inch mocca head.

Aroma: ginger bread and some cinnamon

Taste: Some sweetness, roasted malts, and lots of ginger bread. If you are not into ginger bread, then it is not for you, but luckily I am, and I liked it.

Feel: full body, viscous
