Clear coppery brew with plenty of foam in the Saxo tulip. Abundantly aromatic with some ginger and peach pie. Malty body and spritzy on the tongue. The ingredient list is very interesting, but it's made with pumpkins, not yams. Homage to King Kunta.

Sweet but that nice hop note of Nelson Sauvin. Brown sugar and carrot juice. Oh, I see maple sugar on the label-- yes, yes of course. Sort of a candied yam liqueur but more drinkable. Really quite tasty and one of the better spiced brews I've had. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Grapevine Liquor on Monaco. Bottled 11/24/15.

2015 Vintage

L: Muddy brown orange color with a small tan head and a ring of lacing on the glass, not a very pretty looking beer.

S: Strong note of red wine grapes, notes of oak and some oxidation, with a slight floral hop and not a lot of pumpkin.

T: Sweet red wine grapes, notes of oak and oxidation, a slight bit pumpkin and a small floral hop. Not as much pumpkin as I'd expect.

F: Higher carbonation and medium body.

O: Lots of barrel character and oak but not a bunch of pumpkin or harvest ale characteristics. I think 2 years is a little too long for this to age.

Bottle label info: BTL 11/24/15

Reddish, copper colored body; thick, foamy, off-white head. Strong, phenolic aroma; band-aids. The flavor comes across like a cross between badly aged wine and fermented raisins. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy.

Something is horribly wrong with this beer. It looks and feels okay yet the smell and flavor are extremely off. Perhaps something happened with the aging in used Syrah wine barrels. But a relatively strong ABV and red wine barrel aging, noticeable in the flavors, doesn't explain the over-arching band-aid quality. There is no perceptible smell or taste of pumpkin, yams or even the maple sugar listed on the label's tally of ingredients (also including biscuit and honey malt, Nelson Sauvin hops, and Belgian yeast). Let's just call this one a solid disappointment.

a clever brew, with the pumpkin and spice component being more dominant than any yam flavor, although the sugars are there for sure. love the bourbony finish on this, very alcoholic and mellow, oaky and earthy, a perfect way to wrap up a beer brewed with squash and root vegetable. the dark caramel color is a product of some sweeter roasty malts that fill in the middle with a nice bready depth and velvety texture. this is an easy drinking beer as a result, despite its high abv and complex flavors that need to be slowly disected to be understood. not quite enough carbonation on this, but that contributes to its silky feel, and i really wouldnt change much about this. i have not had their turnip the beets yet, but this one makes me want to try that one even more. great brew.

edit: apparently this is syrah barrel aged. didnt believe the original was barrel aged at all, but there is a whole lot of the red grape here and the oak too. i love what this adds to an already complex and fantastic beer. if the original was aged in wine barrels, the newer batches just have a whole lot more of that character, wetter barrels or longer ageing, its really sensational. 2015 vintage on tap at the brewery now!

Per menu description: a Belgian ale brewed with pumpkins and yams, aged in am Andrew Murray Straggling wine barrel.

Growler served slightly chilled into a small tulip.

Pump Up The Yams (great name, by the way) is a redish brown amber color with thin white head.

Aroma slightly sweet with some red wine character overlying the brown ale malt base.

Flavor is really surprisingly nice with very good integration of pumpkins and red wine. Sounds questionable but really works.

Mouthfeel is smooth and week carbonated.

Overall a surprisingly enjoyable barrel aged vegetable ale.
