Tart AttackTart Attack

Brewed by:
NoDa Brewing Company
North Carolina, United States

Style: Berliner Weissbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.30%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Berliner Weisse style sour ale is full of character and flavor at only 4.3% alcohol by volume. We sour mashed this ale and allowed the souring lactobacillus to create a lovely tart and bright flavor. To further the tart character, we rested it on blackberries after its fermentation was complete. The result is a bright and complex tart ale with both semisweet and dry notes throughout. This ale was brewed to honor Pints for Prostates and all their work in bringing awareness to prostate cancer. So men... get tested, live longer and enjoy more craft beer!

Appearance: an orangish and strawy yellow color. quite hazy and with next to no head with nothing that sticks around

Smell: really wheaty, kind of musky wheat. some tartness. comes off in a bit of a weird musky fashion.

Taste: opens up with a wheat base that is blended with a tart green apples. some slight muskiness but nothing quite like the smell

Mouthfeel: tart and light. not quite refreshing

Overall: the muskiness is a bit off putting. but overall the flavor isn't too bad

on-tap at the brewery

Served in a pint - pale body with rose hues, some fizzy carbonation. Definitely on the low-end of the tartness scale for the style, and especially given the 'tart attack' label. Some clear notes of raspberry and blackberry - would make a logical summer smasher, but as a berliner weiss, this kind of stinks.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Extremely pale and clear. Pinkish hue. No head.

Smell - Faintly acidic. Grainy and a slight fruit. Nothing that I'd call blackberry.

Taste - Grain more than anything. Minimal fruitiness. Slightly sour.

Mouthfeel - Very light. Minimal sourness and, really, flavor.

Overall - Not exciting, but not bad.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into tulip.
A: Pours a clear pink hue with 1/4 inch bubbly white head that quickly dissipates. Interesting...kinda like a fizzy pink lemonade.
S: Tart blackberries, soda (sugary carbonation), hint of sour blueberry cream.
T: Tart blackberries and blueberries abound. Sour fruit notes less apparent than the tart ones. Fairly straightforward, but very well done.
M: Super light body. Some carbonated effervescence tickles the tongue. Tart, sour, with a dry finish.
D: An extremely drinkable/sessionable brew. Would love to have this at an early summer picnic. A focused beer in that it does not try to do too much and instead excels at what it does offer. Very enjoyable. Seek it out!
