Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flagraiser IPA is a big, hoppy tribute to the unfurling of the Grand Union flag atop Prospect Hill in Somerville, MA on January 1, 1776. This ale celebrates our passion for hop aroma and flavor balanced with just the right amount of malt.

Huge aroma and resin-y flavors from the elusive Galaxy hops are the signature of this beer. Built on a solid base of pale malts, this double IPA makes generous use of hops from Columbus, Crystal and Galaxy with the Galaxy hops taking the lead during ten days of aggressive dry-hopping.

Pours a very hazy and very dark golden orange with a frothy two finger white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Nice retention with streaks of soapy lacing left behind. A little dark for the style but otherwise looks pretty good.

Slightly earthy, tropical fruit hops aroma with a grainy, sweet caramel malt backbone. Grassy with resinous oils and pine needle character along with hints of grapefruit, blood orange and pineapple. Smells decent but the malt character is strong than I prefer with lots of caramel, toffee, leather and biscuit.

On the fuller end of medium bodied with a huge sweet malt presence that almost completely overpowers all of the hop flavor. Dry and bitter up front with some earthy pine needle and sticky hop oils but this is nearly cancelled out by the strong malt flavors. Slightly leathery with a lot of caramel sweetness along with hints of toffee, rye, biscuit, hazelnut and dark fruit. There's some subtle boozy heat/sweetness in the finish but overall the ABV is well masked. Overall, this beer is way too malty for the style and doesn't even taste like an IPA in my opinion. Feels more like a weak barleywine than anything else.

A- Easy to develop head, tiny tiny bubbles, some sticky lacing, not a full screen, and not enjoyable to view. Not a blood ruby, but a lighter tone body. Amber if you will.

S- Light citrus fragrance, mostly a grassy hop characteristic. Light, floral by a tad. Little bit of sharpness to it begs some questions. Simple brew.

T- The grassy hops translate well here. However, there isn't too much sweetness to balance it. Its a lot of hop character, not too much else. Small burst of sweet caramel mingles with the orange character, then it rotates into a grassy nature, floats into spicyness... interesting... and finishes off pure bitterness. Just a piny biting center. Nothing oppressive, just lets you know HEY... you are drinking an IPA, son.

M- Very thin. Watery, lackluster. Good sticky flavors, good carbonation, but this body is atrocious. Really lacking here.

It is alright. I'd never order it again, so its definitely below average in that respect.

Burned, toasty malt. Not pleasant.
