Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flagraiser IPA is a big, hoppy tribute to the unfurling of the Grand Union flag atop Prospect Hill in Somerville, MA on January 1, 1776. This ale celebrates our passion for hop aroma and flavor balanced with just the right amount of malt.

Huge aroma and resin-y flavors from the elusive Galaxy hops are the signature of this beer. Built on a solid base of pale malts, this double IPA makes generous use of hops from Columbus, Crystal and Galaxy with the Galaxy hops taking the lead during ten days of aggressive dry-hopping.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Bottled on 02/27/14 on bottleneck. Single purchased at Total Wine (Norwalk, CT) for $1.99.

A: Hazy gold amber with 1-2 fingers of oatmeal colored frothy head with good retention and a nice collar of lacing.

S: Nice Columbus aroma with some pine resin and lemon-orange citrus. Medium strong caramel aroma.

T: Flavor is solid to excellent with a big blast of pine resin and orange-tangerine citrus layered on a medium crystal malt backbone. Has big Columbus character like in the aroma and avoids tasting "weedy" like many Columbus-heavy IPA's. Pretty standard American IPA, but well-executed. No yeast or alcohol character noted.

M: Slick with medium carbonation and body, drinkable with a dry finish.

O: I really enjoyed this IPA, did not have a comparable high-quality IPA to compare to side by side. It compares very favorably to DC Brau The Corruption which unfortunately crosses over into that weedy Columbus category. Nice job on this one by Slumbrew. I wonder how this would taste with a lighter crystal maltbill.

Draught @ Noho Brewfest: This one pours a fairly clear, darker golden color. There was a good, dense off white head on it. There was a BIG pine hop nose. The taste was good. It wasn’t as bitter as the nose would make you think, but still has a good bite to it. Some malts in the background. Nice.
