Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hopheads go to great extremes in their lupulin quests. It’s a worthy endeavor, but fraught with falling across the event horizon in a hoppy stupor. With swirling flavors from both dark malts and the crisp body from pilsner grains, our limited release black IPA will take you to the center of a hop explosion and back, without all the crushing gravity.

A-Pours very dark, nearing black. Slender tan cap of froth. Spotty lacing and mild light penetration.

S-There are some clear underlying notes of pine but all the roast and sweetness steals the show here. Dark chocolate and mocha. Also a strong whiff of booze.

T-The long notes of bittersweet chocolate and medium-roast coffee still shine brighter than the pine hops. The hops lend moderate bitterness but not a ton of expression flavor-wise.

M-Definitely full in body. Could confuse this for a Stout when not paying attention. A bit creamy.

O/D-One of those 'tweener' beers. Kinda dwells in between styles. It was pretty good but one glass didn't lead to two.

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a dark, almost black coloring with a frothy, dense, light tan head that quickly settles into a surface coating. This is a glass of darkness. Aromas of roast and richly bittersweet chocolate, with a resiny, tropical fruit highlighted hops presence. Very aromatic and dynamic nose. Not hop heavy like some Black Ales go for. Flavors are roasty and bitter, with bitter baker's chocolate and a hint of coffee, with a dry hops profile highlighting. Mid-bodied and dry, with a rich bittersweet aftertaste. This is a tasty, layered brew. Bitter, slightly lingering finish that keeps you on the chain for another drink. Solid beer.

Appearance: pours a black color with a 1/2" head that slowly falls. No lace develops.

Smell: pine and chocolate notes come through to the nose.

Taste: nice malty profile, as chocolate, prunes, grapefruit, and some pine tones create a nicely balanced beer. Alcohol is mildly noticeable and bitterness is moderate.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp to start, smoother and a bit dry at the finish. Long lasting aftertaste as the chocolate and pine last a while on the tongue.

Overall: a nicely flavorful beer that is easy to consume. Mildly refreshing for the style, defintely worthy of a try if you see it.

Bomber poured into Kate snifter. Bottled 3-05-13 (20 days ago)

A- Pours very dark brown and sits black in the glass. There's a 1 finger head that stay around for a quite a while and has nice retention. No real lacing is left after the head goes away and has a somewhat lively body

S- More malty than hoppy. Big time roast and subtle smoke and caramel along with an earthy hop bite.

T- Follows the nose nicely. Tastes more like a hoppy porter compared to other Black IPAs which I never mind. The dark malts come out nicely with a solid roast from front to back. Bitterness comes out in the middle with some bitterness and citrus rind. Finish is roasty and bitter.

M- Medium to heavier feel with medium carbonation. Finish is pleasant and the body feels how I like a black IPA, to feel.

O- Nice balanced Black IPA. If your looking for a hop bomb this isnt it but if you want a nice and tasty, well rounded drink this is for you.
