Aramis. I've never heard of this hop before, so I have no real frame of reference here. That's exciting.

Hazed gold – almost like a witbier – with a very sturdy, fine white head. The aroma is unreal. Like running through a freshly-harvested field of grain. Cut straw, wild pollen, chamomile, catnip. It smells wild and feral, like something that could trigger hay fever. Alfalfa and lumberyard with a hint of lima beans. Stupendously intriguing, and certainly the most unique hop aroma I've experienced since Sorachi Ace.

Grainy and earthy, full of fresh and toasted soybean flavors. Unusually rich and spicy for a golden ale, like liquidized pumpernickel. Really moreish and very hoppy but not mouth-punchingly bitter, with a delicate aftertaste redolent of dry-roasted peanuts. Lavender and dried ginger make surprise cameos. How interesting. How bizarre.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2012. Picked up not too long ago from Trembling Madness in York. Bottle conditioned. The label mentions that this ale is hopped with the French variety 'Aramis' - it's new to me!

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A hazy pale gold with low carbonation and fine sediment. Yields a massive head of foam that resembles a meringue; this slowly reduces to a surface layer. Aroma of light, grainy malt with notes of clean, peppery citrus, earthy yeast and faint hints of tropical fruit.

Tastes of light malt with a subtle aromatic hop character and a dry, yeasty finish. Notes of grain, peppery citrus with a hint of grapefruit, faint tropical fruits and earthy yeast esters. A restrained, dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly, with good body. Dry and rather astringent. Aftertaste of earthy yeast and subtle aromatic hops.

Tasty - a well-balanced brew with an interesting hop flavour. It looks great and has a superb blend of aromas and flavours that complement each other nicely. Aramis is not a hop variety I've heard of before, but it's use produces a subtle flavour of light fruit in addition to delivering a mild, spicy bitterness. All told, this is an excellent English pale ale. Well worth trying if you have the chance.
