A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2013. Picked up a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. Freestyle Fridays #25 - the label describes it as a stout made with roasted malt, smoked malt and dates. Intriguing....

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A very dark reddish-brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Produces a huge head of creamy beige foam with excellent retention; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Looks great. Aroma of fruity dark malt with hints of dried fruit, dates, prunes, molasses, mild liquorice, subtle roasted grain, a hint of smoke and faint earthy yeast. Slightly sweet.

Tastes of fruity dark malt with a mild roasted character and a dry finish. Notes of dried fruit, dates, prunes, molasses, faint burnt grain, subtle coffee/cocoa, mild liquorice, a hint of smokiness and earthy yeast. No hops to speak of, though a delicate sweetness and a twinge of alcohol lurk in the background. The smoked malt lends it a weak sourness, followed by a mild bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation but a rather insubstantial body for the style. Lightly astringent, with an aftertaste of burnt grain, dried fruits/dates and subtle smoke.

Rather nice; well-crafted and different. It looks lovely, while the aroma and flavour are decidedly fruity with a restrained roasty character. The dates can be discerned, though the taste is quite subtle. The roasted/dark malt could have been more prominent but the smoked malt does add depth to the flavour. Body is OK but a tad thin - it should be thicker and creamier. Overall, a solid effort with an interesting twist. To be honest I'm surprised more breweries haven't tried using dates in their brews. Worth sampling if you come across it.

Freestyle Fridays #25. Brewed with a selection of roasted malts, smoked malt and a few buckets of dates thrown into the boil.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a black colour with a slightly off-white head.

Smells quite malty - roasted and faintly chocolatey.

Tastes of nothing strongly, but several competing subtle flavours of almost sour dark fruits, dark bitter malts and some hops too. Quite dry.

Overall fairly nice and quite interesting but a bit too much of a lean towards subtle flavours for it to have much of an impression.
