500ml bottle (dated 31/03/14, bought in a great beer shop in Devon, last one so perhaps there a while?)

Translucent burnt orange colour, with thick but airy off-white head and some clinging lacing, masses of bubbles shooting up. Very slight hop and yeast aroma, smokiness somehow results in a sort of bark Potpourri scent, not very big though. Have to be honest, I don't see what's confused about it; initial effervescence but nothing overt, APA like hop (Cascade?) well balanced with enough smoke, crackers, and a reasonably lasting (slightly drying) hoppy finish. Light to medium body and medium carbonation.

Barely smokier than the smoked ingredient-less Schlenkerla helles can sometimes be, but a respectable skew on a pale ale and a good session beer. First beer from Arbor, nice to see a UK brewery experimenting a bit, and on my doorstep.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of March 2014. ABV is stated as 5.2%. Acquired a while back from Trembling Madness in York. This is Freestyle Fridays #35 - a smoked Belgian pale ale. Brewed with smoked malt, American hops and a mix of Belgian and German yeasts (in a word - nuts).

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy coppery-brownish hue with plentiful fine sediment and medium carbonation. Produces a massive head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a thick surface layer. Slight lacing. Aroma of smoky caramel malt with hints of fruitiness, earthy yeast, subtle funk, stewed leaves and a twinge of blue cheese/mould. Faintly vinous, with little hops to speak of. Rather nice.

Tastes of smoked malt with a yeasty character and a dry, bitter finish. Notes of smoke, caramel, subtle dried fruit, earthy yeast, stewed leaves, a hint of funk and a faint blue cheese twang. The smokiness lends a touch of charcoal barbecue and kippers to the flavour. Highly attenuated and very dry, followed by a restrained, malty bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and good body. Very astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of smoke, earthy yeast and harsh cardboard.

Not bad, though I confess that I find the yeastiness to be over the top. Perhaps this bottle has sat around for too long. The beer looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are smoky with a extended yeasty character. Nice thick body but feels over-carbonated. An intriguing effort - worth a punt if you like smoked beers.

Freaky Fridays #35. "Cloudy Belgian smoked pale ale". Poured from a 500ml bottle into a dimpled pint mug.

Pours a dark cloudy amber colour with a thick white head.

Smells fairly smokey - always nice.

Tastes a bit confused. Heavily smoked and heavily hopped. Doesn't work too well for my tastes. Crisp mouthfeel.

Overall a decent attempt but doesn't work out great.
