8/2015...brewery draft. Pours bright gold. See through with a white foam lid. Crisp pilsener nose. Clean taste that is light and balanced. A subtle bitter sneaks in at the end. Good pils.

Served on-tap in a shaker pint glass at the brewery's tap room.

Having missed this one the first time it was tapped, I've been rather pleased to see it hanging around recently. It pours a clear straw topped by a finger of slightly off-white foam. The nose comprises clean white bread, grass, light mixed greens, and a touch of hard water. The taste brings in more of the same, the bread a bit biscuitier now, helping to balance some of the hoppiness, but also leaving plenty untouched to bloom as they see fit. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a crisp finish. Overall, a solid pils, one that doesn't overdo it on the hops and doesn't forget that the backbone of a beer is its malt profile. It won't set the pilsner world on fire, but it's eminently drinkable when it's available.

I tried this new(ish) Pilsner on its day of release at the brewery and enjoyed it better than most of the Nouveau Pilsners being produced these days -- here's hoping that the canned offering pleases my palate as well.

I call this "newish" because the recipe has changed since the beer was first brewed a few years ago; it's now dry-hopped and exclusively utilizes the modern German Polaris hop.

From a 16 ounce can to my short Becher glass. Canned on 07/06/17.

L -- Hazy (unfiltered), bright golden with a lot of carbonation and a tight, dense white head that holds up well.

S -- Mellow piny hops. Not quite traditional.

T -- Spicy hop flavor up front with some mild citrus and resins and a light balance of bready malts. Finishes with spicy bitter hops and a touch of resin character and crackery malts lingering in the aftertaste.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft up front to dry in the finish with a light-medium body.

O -- While this beer is nothing I'd expect with a label of Pilsner, it's also not quite an APA or IPA clone like most Nouveau Ami Pils. It's certainly brewed with the hophead in mind, but the Polaris hops don't exactly replicate Pacific Northwest hops. There's an herbal spiciness that's very European, but I wish they weren't so dominant over the malts.

Aroma is floral citrus, sweet bread and Czech lager yeast. The flavor is citrus-fruit, malts, mild sugar sweetness, Czech lager yeast and a spicy hop finish.
