a forgotten bottle of ipa so old now that the label says lucid still, not north loop, a name change which happened at least a couple of years ago. the beer unsurprisingly hasnt held up great, being an ipa and all, but it ends up drinking heavy like an american barleywine for what it is, and still has some merit, oddly enough. a lot of the hop bitterness has been retained, which is nicely set against a pretty heavy grain base for a basic ipa, probably oxidized and turned a bit sweet since it was brewed, but with the aggressive high alpha bitterness, it actually works. the beer has lots of body and a ton of head on it, really active and alive, which i guess lightens it up some. no infection or anything weird with the yeast at all either, just tired at this point. i suppose its not really fair to rate or judge a dated ipa like this, but its interesting to see how some age decently and morph into drinkable beers resembling other styles, while some just decay into oblivion. id like to revisit it fresh, it sure seems like its mighty robust on the hops, but i dont even know if these guys are making this beer anymore...

Unlike a typical IPA hop profile, that focuses on piney or grapefruit or "juicy" flavors, this beer piles them up and provides a long bitter flavor with a note of everything. For clues, the brewers offer only "4-pounds of hops per barrel''. The body and finish are fine for the style, and it looks like a solid beer - it has a healthy head and nice clarity. I could understand why this beer isn't a favorite for everybody - its could be too bitter, it has a weird label, nobody hypes it, it doesn't have a huge stinky smell. ANYBODY who thinks highly of Surly's IPA should give this a chance again. Maybe Surly woke up your palette.

Cloudy copper color. One inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, caramel malt, slight piney hops, citrus hops, slight wheat, hint of tea, and slight alcohol. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a strong bitterness. Tastes of earthiness, caramel malt, slight yeast, hint of biscuit, grass, citrus hops, alcohol, slight tea, and a hint of piney hops. Overall, good appearance and complexity, but aroma and body are average while the blend is decent.

This is my favorite beer. Eventually another will capture the throne. For now, this is my #1.

This beer pours a light amber with a middling head. The aromas are primarily piney and tropical, with an hint of citrus. The taste leads with tropical flavors, followed by a pine blast and lingering aftertaste. The mouthfeel is a bit thick, but pleasant. Overall this is a decent IPA, but a little dull and unbalanced.

12 oz bottle poured into a Lagunitas jar.
A good, standard American IPA by Fulton, sent to me courtesy of Hop-Droppen-Roll. Something I'd be happy to see in a restaurant setting, especially a wing place. Nice citrus, little bit of pine and enough of a malt backbone to pull it all together.

Small head with a dark golden color. Poor head-retention, but otherwise a nice appearance.
Smell is sweet, and citra-abundant.
Taste is quite bitter, with some citrus and floral notes in the aftertaste. Taste is light, with high carbonation.
This really didn't work for me. The combination between the high carbonation, and the intensive bitter-flavor, did not add up to an enjoyable brew.
