Lucid Duce', the Imperial Red Ale. Oak Aged! 8% ABV. Brewed and bottled by Lucid Brewing, Minnetonka, Minnesota.
Appearance: clear, crimson colored, slim white head.
Aroma: Malt is raging, hops are quiet. A little fruity, a bit mineral-y, earthy, a trifle flinty. Just stopping short of sweet. Or maybe just a little over the line.
Taste: Mild and mellow in the mouth. Largely malty, just enough hops for balance. Full-bodied, at first, starting bold, and rounding out, ultimately. I wish it were bolder, still, though. Tasty stuff, though, but I keep wanting it to be bigger. As it is, it's a drinker, though strong. The oak-aging is adding some complexity, and tamping down some sweetness.
No gobbledygook. It is what it is.

Imperial Red Ale. Hmm.
Appearance : A beautiful fiery reddish orange glow, 70% transparency. The head is thick and stable, off-white, and resting at about 1 finger. It leaves tattoos of its once 2 fingered stature in the form of webby lacing on the glass.
Aroma : The imperial character sure comes out right away. Strong alcohol and smoked hop leaf, with sweetly roasted malts and hints of sweet potato/yam, caramel, clove, molasses, and oat.
Taste : Wow, this is hitting me in stages. I'm trying to process. Its actually really f'ing decent. A bite of dry malts up front, some oak, mixed with a potent hit of hop flower rolled in sugar... followed by large waves of caramel and candied yams, and ends with a slight smokiness and roasted dry flavor. Hops come back on the finish but less sweet. The smell combines with the taste to create an experience. Totally unique and totally bomb.
Mouthfeel : Creamy, medium bodied, appropriately carbonated, ends semi-dry.
Overall : If I could go back and clean the store out for the $6 I paid for this four pack on closeout - I would. A great tasting smoked red and exceeded my expectations.

The nose is fairly mild with some spice, vanilla, biscuit, caramel, dried fruit. It pours a brilliant deep reddish amber under a 2" finely bubbled foam cap from a bomber bottle. The 12 ounce bottles have slightly less head. Big biscuit flavors, fruit, vanilla, caramel, alcohol and a hint of fig. there is a very slight tannic astringency on the finish. The hops and alcohol flavors join together to temper the rich malt flavors. The body is big - just a shade under chewy. I prefer it out of the bomber bottles - the carbonation is softer. The 12 oz. bottles are crisper and have a little bit of a bite. The tap version is somewhere in between. Big and bold, yet fairly well balanced.
