Notes / Commercial Description:
Beelzebub is an American Imperial Stout. The intensely smooth and rich roasted flavor is complemented by the unmistakable presence of hops. The bitterness is held in check, preserving the flavors of dark chocolate. This ale is aggressively dry hopped with Citra to cut through it all. Hail Santa.

On tap poured into a 12oz glass.

Pours a very opaque dark black with a nice super thick, super dark creamy head. Nose is a bit light, it's a bit toasty and coffee.

Taste is sweet, but there's a nice coffee-like bitterness to it that's really good. The alcohol is there and a bit warming but it's not in your face at all. It super thick, chewy and creamy. Really well done and great for a cold evening.

Appearance: Opaque and black with a sticky brown head. Looks like a dessert.

Smell: Strong aroma of roasted grain, with a firm maltiness in the background. American hops make themselves known too.

Taste: Chocolate and espresso flavors mingle with a delicious deep maltiness, and a nice blast of hop flavor upon swallowing. Awfully smooth for the advertised 90 IBU. Alcohol is very well hidden (beware!).

Mouthfeel: Substantial but not overbearing. The finish dries out the palate just enough to make another sip seem like a good idea.

Drinkability: Very high, maybe too high, as it can sneak up on you (at least it did to my wife). This could age nicely, but its present freshness is very pleasant.

On tap @ The Alchemist (Waterbury, VT) on 2/18/11. Served in a footed Pils glass.

Pours black in the glass, with 1 ½ fingers of thick and foamy dark mocha head. This shrinks down to about a ½ finger or so but stays quite rich, leaving back lacing that hangs in robust swathes down the sides of the glass. Wow, the hops really drive the aroma here, being floral, citrusy, and even a little dank, and are propped up by a heavy underlying mix of sweet chocolate and dark roasted malts. This really has some pop to it.

The taste starts with a thick base of dark roasted coffee and sweeter notes of chocolate and caramel but there is definitely a rather full feeling hop profile as well, as green feeling leafy and citric bitterness pretty much controls this profile the whole way through. Unfortunately, almost to a degree where the hop profile just kind of runs over more the Stout-like qualities of this at times. The finish is dry roasted and bitter with a touch of lingering herbal hops. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied and initially more thick and chewy up front but then gets steadily sharper feeling as you swallow. Alcohol presence is overall well hid and just adds to the overall intensity of the profile.

This one really towed the line for me between a hoppy American Stout and an American Black Ale at times. Almost like a fuller version of their El Jefe from here. I mean my only beef here is that if you're going to call this an American Stout, then the hops should run second to and support the malt base, not the other way around as is the case here. Semantics aside, this was still pretty darn tasty and well worth your time if it's on tap during your visit here.
