Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The most powerful IPA in the Due South Category series, the Cat 5 is big on hops and big on flavor. Clocking in at 8.5% ABV and 96 IBU’s, the first bands of malts will make way for the surge of hops on the palate. Designed for the true hophead, this is not a beer for the faint of heart.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #87 (Apr 2014):

Pungent, Rind, Bitter, Warming

One brewers IPA is another’s Double IPA, so from that we’ll take the brewers word that this is just an amped up IPA. This beer stinks, a good stink at that of pungent hops. The hefty malt base is big enough to hold up to this onslaught of hoppiness and even alcohol. A massive brew for drinkers with venturesome palates.

The closest beer to being a clone of cigar city jai alai that I have tasted so far. Delicious and local to me

12 oz can with "canned on" dating

Pours heavily hazed dark orangy amber, and leaving a load of fine lacing all up and down the glass.

Softly citric nose with grapefruit, pineapple, mango and general fruity goodness.

This is a big and bold, fresh tasting "imperial" IPA (according to the can), loaded with more citric fruits and hoppy goodness.

Pleasingly carbonated and easy flowing in the mouth. All in all a terrific brew. Happy to see more and more quality craft created in Florida.

Orange to gold in color with a very murky complexion and plenty of sediment suspended within. There'a easily an inch of creamy beige foam on top. Moderate lacing. The aroma is of intense citrus hops and light malt. I'm tasting a wallop of citrus hops and a hint of light malt. The mouth is a bit sticky and resinous, true to style.

Due South Brewing Co. "Category 5 IPA"
on tap @ South, Philadelphia, PA on 10 May 2016

- Haha! I was told this was "Category 8" and I had to call the brewery to make sure that wasn't true. Not normally available in PA, this must have been a left-over from the Craft brew Conference a few days earlier.

Notes: Hazy amber orange body. Short but creamy white head. Better than average retention and lacing. Aroma is pungent with hop resin, pine, a little bit of citrus, and caramelish malt. The flavor follows with more tropical fruit and a splash of alcohol. Solidly malty and bitter, it finishes dry and somewhat herbal and spicy/piney. Overall it's a solid, kind of big IPA, but in that it's also a bit blocky and unrefined.
