Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The most powerful IPA in the Due South Category series, the Cat 5 is big on hops and big on flavor. Clocking in at 8.5% ABV and 96 IBU’s, the first bands of malts will make way for the surge of hops on the palate. Designed for the true hophead, this is not a beer for the faint of heart.

Wow my first category 5

A- looks great, deep orange that's pretty clear, nice one finger of white head and beautiful lacing

S- big hop profile! Nice grapefruit, a wet piney note, balanced by a sweet malt undertone

T- juicy grapefruit, citrus, pine, dank, nice bitter bite, with a nice sweet caramel malt backbone

M- mouthfeel is great, perfect amount of carbonation, medium to almost medium full body.

O- overall a great DIPA. Pretty much exactly what I want in a DIPA. Nice big tropical hop profile that's balanced by a light malt sweetness. Bitter and dry, but finishes nice and smooth. Taste very fresh, I can tell they use an insane amount of hops in this one. Great brew!

Rock solid DIPA from Due South after a shakes start the retooled cat 5 is pretty damn great. Love the hop profile , mouthfeel and overall flavor. Great job!

Love the grapefruit flavor and oily hoppy mouthfeel. Tastes fuller tan it looks, deceptively smooth and will sneak up on you.

Don't really know what to say about this DIPA. It's a lot to say the least., a lot of hops, especially grapefruit flavors, with a big amount of malts, overpowered by the bitterness, and then the booze, finished with some more hops and strangely some acidity. It's a chewy beer. The beer has a lot of things going on, you could say too many, but, any hophead would love to have this in their fridge. A decent representation of the style.

very good DIPA...the smell is absolutely perfect..the taste, however, leaves a small amount to be desired...mouthfeel is a smidge over carbonated but overall very impressed with what due south is doing and i would buy this any day if i had the chance

On tap at Leftovers. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance - Deep orange. Hazy. Nice white head and great lacing. Retains very well.

Smell - Pine and pithy grapefruit hop aroma. Musty with some caramel sweetness.

Taste - Brighter citrus just for a moment. Orange becomes grapefruit which becomes piney and grassy. Builds into a musty bitterness, eventually overpowering a slightly sweet malt backbone.

Mouthfeel - Quite bitter. Medium heavy body. Weird malt flavor at the very end.

Overall - Pretty good hop flavor, but a rough finish.

Another specialty release from these guys, this one follows an oft used theme here in Florida; Hurricanes. They already make a Category 3 and Category 4, each with increasing alcohol and hops as the category increases (you know, like in a hurricane Saffir-Simpson scale). Of all of the Category's they make, this was probably my favorite.

More of a hop forward beer than the others, this was right up my alley. A little dark in color but full of citrus and piney hops in the aroma. Flavor was packed with pine resin and oil with plenty of bitterness. Caramel malts give a decent backbone but didnt drown out the star of the show, which was the hops. Not quite up to the level of the big boys, but a very decent beer in any regard. Well done.
