BJ's is pushing this as their first creation of the year. It looks like this year might be promising for them. Hope this one sticks around for a while. For $5 more you can keep the glass!!

A= Golden in color with a thin white head that dissipated quickly, but left nice lacing. Minimal carbonation.

S= Floral hops and hidden spices that I could not detect precisely. Alcohol is present.

T= Strong malt sweetness with enough spiciness to give it a good balance. Again, the alcohol is there. I find BJ's brews are a little on the "watery" side, but not at all a bad compliment to their tasty pizza.

M= Medium bodied. Just enough carbonation for a decent weightiness.

D= I am not sure what the ABV is on this, but it was up there according to my happiness after one. I would have had another, but I decided to go with the 4-taster so I could have a pale ale to go with my pizza, and some darker porter and stout to go with my pizzookie.

On tap. Served in a gold rimmed 10 oz. tulip glass.

A: Hazy golden-orange beneath a white head. Average retention. Minimal lacing.

S: Yeasty. Malty. Sweet. Some minor phenolic / spice.

T: Sweet. Candyish. Vanilla. Clove. Other background spice.

M: Medium body - the yeast adds to that. Standard carbonation.

D: A decent beer. A little refinement would take it a long way, but the alcohol never shows, and there's certainly no defect to it. Well worth trying.

Draft to 12oz Goblet

@Bj's Chino Hills, CA
2011 release

App- It's a hazy golden yellow with a little bit of orange in the center. A bit see-through with a semi 1/8" bit of head. No real cling to this one.

Smell- You really can tell its a BSPA. Huge floral yeast with spices and malts dominate. A bit way too boozy on the nose with a bit more peppery than I thought would be in there.

Taste- I liked the taste of this one a bit better than the nose. A bit smoother on the malts with a good bit of citrus booze. It had a bit less spice which I appreciated. A good bit of yeast rounds out the profile

Mouth- A bit of a medium body with a nice citrusy malt residual flavor and a little spice. A bit prickly carbonation to top it off.

Drink- Not earth shattering but still very good and full of flavor. A nice balance and upfront booze with some nice cirtus. An pretty above Belgian style with a complementing yeast as mentioned.

On tap at Carlsbad location

A: Golden color with a thin and slightly creamy off white head.

S: Loads of spices with some asian pear, Belgian yeast and some booze.

T: Definitely didn't think this was as high in alcohol as it was. Wasn't expecting a ton from this but it actually wasn't bad. Lots of spiciness with some clove and pear sweetness. As the beer warmed, I started to get a bit of a hop resin and metal flavor, which I wasn't real big on. Still, a pretty solid beer and probably the best I've had at BJs.

On tap at BJ's Escondido.

A: The color of straw with a fleeting white head. Nice color and good clarity.

S: A shocking quantity of coriander with light clove and sweet malt. I detect vanilla, booze, and a little honey. Esters are redolent of pear and apple.

T: Sweet grain with honey, nutmeg, and way too much coriander. I get a little clove and a lot of alcohol. This is very sweet with candied apple notes.

M: Lower medium body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Overspiced and too sweet.

Grand Cru XVI, on tap on 11/15/15. Pretty, golden hazy body, with a wisp of a head. Smell is full of fruit esters, as is the taste. Pleasant, but sweet. The trick is in the feel, which is quite clean and very light on the tongue, showing virtually none of the high alcohol content present. Far too easy to drink, this is something that could be knocked back easily, but should be consumed judiciously.

On tap at BJ's in Valencia, CA.

Pours a slightly hazy gold with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, Belgian yeast, spices, and slight citrus. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it's fairly boozy and the taster size was more than enough for me.
