October 5th, 2013 - Latitude 33's Camel Corp IPA comes at the end of a long series of tasters. The plastic cup doesn't do it any favors, but even in this classy setting, it looks like a good, sudsy beer. The head is gone, but the color runs the gamut between a dark yellow and a deep, golden brown. The alcohol during the day's events takes its toll on my senses, but there's a clear pine scent to this brew. The flavor is plenty hoppy too, with lots of pine and pine resin, too. But that's where my senses take me. As a post-drinking beer, it has all the strength I need to detect flavor, and that's enough at the right moment.

Aroma of grapefruit
Head large (7.5 cm, aggressive pour), off white, frothy, sloooowly diminishing to a 2 cm irregular layer.
Lacing good – wide complete rings of tiny to large bubbles
Body light orange, clear
Flavor begins slightly bitter without the grapefruit promised by the nose; no malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl; very sessionable
Palate light to medium, slightly oily, carbonation soft

Newly released 22oz bottle - Consumed 07/07/13 with my FW snifter glass

A: The Single Hump pours on the darker side of amber with some caramel and auburn hues. There is a light haziness to the body with a dense half finger of khaki froth on top. Moderately retaining, with some etched lace festooned upon the glass after each sip.

S: Smells sappy with piney hops and some softer accents of grapefruit zest. It is lightly tropical with a little herbal spiciness mixed in. Soft caramel and bready pale malt sweetness. Nice hop forward aroma that is pleasant and enjoyable.

T: Flavors are abundantly piney accompanied with some candied citrus peels of grapefruit, lemon sprigs, and a dash of tropical spice. More herbal and dank resin towards the latter part of the drink with a supporting malt base of toffee sweetness and breads. There is an upper level of perceived bitterness that is not overly sharp or astringent. Alcohol is incredibly well incorporated and all together this a very nicely balanced brew. Real nice hoppy flavors.

M: The beer is moderately full with a healthy amount of bready pale malts but kept on the lighter side rather with its carbonation and peppery bitterness. Nice lifting dryness towards the finish with a long lasting residual effect.

D: Very drinkable and quite enjoyable. Displays great balance while maintaining a hop forward profile. Healthy doses of pine and citrus with supporting malt profile. Slightly sweeter than a true West Coaster but a real nice offering from this local brewery. Excited to start trying more of their stuff.

At $5 per bomber I will definitely be picking up more of this one.

I had the beer on draft at SDTaproom during a recent trip to San Diego. Served in a pint glass and arrived with a nice lacy head topping a copper colored beer. Mellow hop aroma and flavor up front, finishes with a little alcohol flavor. Overall, a nice beer.

Deliciously drinkable, sweet and malty IPA. On tap at Churchill Cigar Lounge in Old Town. Golden amber in the pint shaker. A bright lemony flavor followed by a Pale ale sort of biscuity taste.

A well-balanced mix of malt and hops. A great hop flavor. Brewer says they use Cascades, Columbus, and New Zealand Matueka hops. Not really that bitter. A touch of the citrus peel, but all quite refined and restrained. A big winner that is both hoppy and highly quaffable. I"m looking forward to trying more from Latitude 33.

On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad

An almost orange color with a nice white head. Plenty of citrus hop aromas to this along with pineapple and floral notes. Some hints of toffee, a light bread, and some mild pine. The flavor has a nice fruity bite to it. Good grapefruit, tangerine, and pineapple. Moderate bitterness on the finish to balance out a light malt sweetness. Some floral hop notes throughout as well as a light tropical character.

On tap at Latitude 33 Brewing Company in Vista, CA.

Pours a slightly hazy honey orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, honey, and malt. Taste is much the same with a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is quite tasty and easy to drink

Appearance: Fairly dark for the style, more of an amber-hued IPA, with very good clarity and head retention. A beautiful beer.

Smell: Not as expressive as some of the better IPAs coming out of San Diego, but still quite nice. Tropical fruit and citrus are dominant, bringing to mind papaya, Mandarin oranges and grapefruit. There's a touch of caramel malt and rustic bread. The brewery's web site says that motueka is used in the boil but not as a dry hop, which seems strange - the tropical fruit aromatics would be bigger with more post-boil additions of motueka.

Palate: Grapefruit and orange up front, with an undertone of tropical fruit (papaya, touch of pineapple). The hop character becomes more spicy mid-palate, somewhat oniony and herbal. It's fairly dry and attenuated, though a touch of caramel peeks through beyond the hops. The finish brings a long, lingering, resinous bitterness.

Overall: This is good stuff, very promising, but it's not quite up to par with the likes of Pizza Port, Alpine, Green Flash or other San Diego greats. Hopefully the brewery continues to tweak the recipes and dial in the brewing process. This could be an outstanding beer in time.

Fresh batch on tap at the brewery. Snifter. 

A: Dark orange with great clarity and an inch of frothy white sea foam.

S: Bright mango and guava with accompanying tangerine and orange. Lightly spicy floral notes blend with grapefruit, cantaloupe, and passion fruit. There's a little caramel malt in the background. Excellent aroma.

T: Lots of orange and tangerine with a strong melon presence that is reminiscent of cantaloupe. I get a touch of guava and faint pineapple notes. Malt provides a little balance and a desirable level of caramel sweetness. Alcohol is not evident in the flavor. The beer is moderately bitter and smooth throughout with no harsh notes.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: A really nice IPA. A little sweeter than other San Diego IPAs, but the malt augments the drinkability and seems to amplify the vibrant hop presence. The Motueka adds some really cool tropical notes.
