Part of a recent arrival from BOTMC. Never been to Coney Island, but hey, I've had a Coney dog! Let's give the brew a whirl. Popping the menacing top yields a smell of orange and allspice with more citrus. Pours into a stemless red wine glass with a nice cloudy yelow orange with a very thin head. Taste is almost like a Belgian wit beer with a serious carbonation bite. Evident in the taste is the spicing, some good dry bitterness that has a bite but not a chomp, and a slight citrus fruitiness throughout. Great thirst quenching brew. Nice bitterness. Very light and refreshing with no sacrifice to flavor. I like it.

A white lager beer, hmm somethin different.Poured into a pilsner all head and foam even with a gentle pour,it took forver to finally come down to pour more. After a long wait a lemony yellow color emerged with a spritzy-like look to it.aromas were a little faint just some toasted grain and mineral with a hint of ginger. At the beginning the flavors are light and toasty and pretty pleasent even a hint of lemon comes thru but man that finish is a little harsh, big ginger and fennel hit hard and kinda ruins the beer and its drinkibility. This beer is off kilter in a bad way,Iam not sure how old it is and its from a brewery that I respect, very odd.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue VII:

What's a white lager? Why is there ginger, orange peel, coriander and crushed fennel in it? Specialty two-row malt, torrified wheat, acidulated malt, flaked oats and caramel Pils malt? What the freak?! Oh ... it's like a Belgian Wit, but a lager, and not Belgian, or maybe something completely different? To hell with styles!

Cloudy, milky, straw colored with a foamy white head that drops to a thin lace. Major ginger in the nose, with fennel and sweet lilac right behind it. Chalky yeast, doughy malts. Crisp at first, then the palate gets all fluffy. Light-bodied. A very dry beer throughout with acidic edges. Doughy malts, light sweetness, and some perceived fullness, thanks to the oats. The ginger pushes forward the most with a good amount of zest, and is flanked by the fennel, which drops some anise here and there. Powdery coriander. Finish goes thin, with a watery orange that's reminiscent of Orangina, but oddly finishes pretty clean and dry.

This beer is a clown, a goon, a freak in a fucking sideshow! (We were listening to SlapShot's Old Tyme Hardcore while drinking this.) We dig it! And skip the OJ in the AM, there's no reason why the world shouldn't be drinking this for breakfast alongside your eggs, bacon, beans and toast.

A - Pours a cloudy, pale yellow, with a slight heads that falls very quickly becoming nothing. Moderate carbonation.

S - Smells like a wit, some definite spice in there, lots of fruit aroma. For a lager this has too much spice and too much fruit. Nice but out of style.

T - Orange, spice, yeastiness...this tastes exactly like a wit to me. So they used lager yeast...okay it is a clean wit. I don't know, just seems like they tried to do something new and/or different but didn't. Pale lager...I think not.

M - Clean and light, very refreshing, nice carbonation level.

D - Very refreshing, could enjoy this at a hot outside BBQ or after yard work. Think this beer is just out of style, but it does not hurt the drinkability.

12oz bottle. Pours a hazy dark gold with a big rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet citrusy malts, floral spices, and ginger. Smells a bit like soapy household cleaning supplies.

The flavor is more of the same - sweet malts, floral spices and a lot of spicy ginger. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with sharp carbonation.

Overall, tastes like a soapy ginger wit. Interesting but not too appealing to me.

Presentation: It was sampled from a brown 1pt. 6oz bottle and poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: It has a hazy pale yellow color with lots of super tiny yeast partials floating in it. Up top sits a small one finger thick dull white head. It is thick, creamy and long lasting. This hang time makes for lots of slick spotty lacing all the way down the glass as I drink.

Smell: The aroma has an odd but pleasant sweet spicy character like ginger and black liquorish. There are no hints of hops, just spice and maybe some light malt.

Taste/Palate: There is a light malt base with a mix of citrus notes, black liquorish/fennel, light ginger notes and some hops. The hops have a complementary spicy, earthy and lightly floral quality it them. The finish is dry with a cool touch of spice lingering on the tongue. The carbonation is light but still quite active on the palate giving it a smooth slick texture.

Notes: This beer just has an interesting flavor to me and good balance. I think this would be a nice beer to par with lamb or pasta with Italian sausage in the sauce.

Bomber pours a hazy straw yellow body with a tall vanilla head that deposits some puffy and splotchy lacing. Aroma is lemony citrus, hay, coriander, ginger, and pepper. Light medium body with seltzery carbonation. Taste has a lemon rind dry bitterness with a subtle spicing of ginger and pepper. Just a hint of malt sweetness. Spices in no way detract here. An excellent summer beer that is highly drinkable.

Pours very wit like, pale, cloudy, the head is white and wispy and then quickly gone, leaving next to no lace. lemony, perfumed nose with a hint of lighter sweet maltyness. Light and thirst quenching, again I get the feeling this is very wit like. More lemon, more perfume, light spice (coriander & pepper), tasty stuff. Nothing real special, but a respectable warm weather quaffer.

Appearance: bright yellow, cloudy, small head,

Smell: lemon, orange, and coriander jump out

Taste: just like the smell plus a bit of cloves

Mouthfeel: sweet, smooth, medium body, borderline syrupy

Drinkability: This is a very pleasant wheat ale. I love the sweetness that goes along with the wheat. If the ABV was not as high, I could session this

The beer pours a hazy golden-orange color with a white head. The aroma is very heavy on the coriander with some orange and wheat notes thrown in. I also get some mint notes, but I am not sure where they are coming from. The flavor is pretty much what you expect in a Belgian White. I get some coriander and wheat, as well as some very light fruit and floral notes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

From tasting notes. L: Pours copper amber with a slight haze under a thin white foam collar. S: Rich banana nose, citrus and spice. T: Big banana, malt, lemony tartness, spice, tropical fruit and faint coconut. F: medium body, medium carbonation. O: This is one of the most banana tasting beers I have had but surprisingly it works.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into He'Brew pint glass.

Appearance: A cloudy golden orange with a moderate amount of rising bubbles. Solid three fingers of white head quickly fades into a thin patchy layer. Lacing is pretty light.

Smell: A pretty spicy aroma. Lots of ginger upfront with some pepper and coriander. Some wheat grains and caramel malts with hints of lemon zest and cinnamon. Also some lager yeast and hints of citrus hops.

Taste: Like the smell, lots of spices and lemon. A big taste of ginger with some pepper and coriander. Some caramel malts and wheat grains with lager yeast. A big presence of lemon zest. Some hints of citrus hops and cinnamon.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very crisp and smooth.

Overall: A very interesting and tasty beer. Spices really stand out but are well balanced by the lemon and malts.

Fizzy quickly fleeing carbonation white thin head with a murky golden orange carob of color. No lacing whatsoever, head was barely even there. Aroma sharp pine/herb/spice driven nose with a hint of citrus peel. A spicy barrage of flavors, fennel celery like flavor with citrus peel and rose water this is a complex wit lager. It actually reminds me of Philly Brewing Fleur de Leigh. A dry bitterness reigns in the fnish leaving spice on the palate, mouthfeel is coated with spice lighter bodied with a restrained carbonation. Drinkability is decent I didn't know what to think of this hybrid wit/lager, but those freaks in Coney Island sure are creative.

shared 22 oz bottle.
Poured a nice golden-amber with a lot of visible carbonation. Good and durable white head.
The aroma is similar to some Belgian pales, light bready malt with a mix of spices.
The spices are more pronounced in tasting and mostly over-power the malts. Fortunately, the spice mix is appealing, and mixes well with the hops. Surprisingly tart, especially for a lager, with a solid lemon-lime component.

M: nice airy, light feel; good, lively carbonation.

O: a refreshing spicy lager that was better than expected. Recommended.

On-tap at Diesel in Atlanta.

Pours an almost opaque golden-orange color with a half-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of light malts with hints of breadiness. Also present are moderate amounts of candied citrus fruits and hints of coriander.

Tastes good. Light malt flavors up front are joined quickly by good amounts of syrupy citrus flavors - mostly oranges with hints of lemon. Midway through the sip solid amounts of spices work their way into things, including coriander and rosemary. The ending is crisp and lightly bitter.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is OK. I finished my glass without a problem however I'm not sure about another.

Overall this beer was better than I was expecting but the flavors weren't smooth enough to make it above average. Worth a shot to see for yourself, especially in the warmer months.

S: Bottle poured into an Ommegang glass

A: Hazy yellow with a thick fluffy head and good carbonation.

S: Spice, hops, some orange

T: Spice overtakes most of the beer taking away from the citrus notes that are present.

M: Carbonation stops the beer from feeling to heavy even though it is unfiltered.

D: It is drinkable, however, why would want to?

Overall: I'm disappointed. I do not mind aggressive spice, however, it is not blended well. The spice mess with the fruity taste that could shine and the finish is not pleasant.

Not sure exactly what to think about this one. It smelled nice as it came out of the bottle but smelled a little stale smelled it out of the glass. It pours a cloudy pale brown, by far the best quality of the beer. It tasted wheaty, slightly spiced and flat. It leaves a flat taste in the mouth as the taste sticks in the mouth. Aftertaste doesn't stick around that long and the beer goes down fairly easily. This might fit some peoples taste but i didnt enkoy it.

A hazed golden blonde brew with a simple off white fizzed head. The head is lacking in longevity but the beer looks appetizing for the style.

The nose reminds me of a Belgian wit, with a spiced scent combined with a yeasty and malt breadiness. Very nice.

Taste starts very smooth and slick and has notes of the spice present in the nose. Again very much like a Belgian wit with hints of coriander and orange peel, along with a mild breaded grain flavor. Tasty!

Mild carbonation and the smooth malty flavor make this beer feel creamy and slightly thick. The taste is very fresh and clean making this a vey drinkable beer. Excellent brew, I'm glad to have tried this and would buy it again in a heartbeat!

22oz bottle, Friday after-work chick and snake - check, crazy horned clown imagery - check, BA Magazine endorsement - check. Let's get rockin'!

This beer pours a cloudy golden yellow colour, with one finger of soapy white head, which disappears in an instant, leaving a few specks of lace around the glass. It smells of sweet citrus, soft peppercorn, and a bit of coriander. The taste is white pepper, white grain, lemon, ginger, leafy hops, and a bit of alcohol as it warms. The carbonation is average, the body medium weight and a bit fruity, and it finishes dry, the warming spices slowly sinking back in.

Not really to style at all, but that's not Shmaltz's fault. A stand-up fruity, spicy lager, and one that doesn't do you in after a couple glasses.

Yellow-orange in colour and hazy with suspended yeast, this lager really does look like a witbier. A somewhat poorly retained head leaves no lacing behind as it recedes. The aroma is pungent with freshly grated ginger, also providing notes of lemon and orange. Spicy ginger goes really well with the citrus and spice flavours one normally expects in a traditional witbier. Flavours of orange, coriander, and lemon are all noticeable alongside the more prominent ginger. Wheat provides a little bit of tang. Mild yet assertive bitterness in the finish. Pretty full bodied for a witbier; moderate carbonation helps it feel a bit lighter. I can understand why the ginger aroma and flavour might put some people off, but I happen to like this a lot. It's quite refreshing. Definately happy to have given this one a try.

This is the second beer I've had brewed with ginger - my first was the Hitachino Nest long before I started reviewing, which I found unpalatably sour. Remembering that past experience with ginger beer, I was a little hesitant coming into this one. I was really surprised though - this one won me over.

Shmaltz- Coney Island Albino Python

A- Hazy bright yellow with a thick white head. Decent lacing.
S- Grapefruit and ginger root with lemon and licorice.
T- Light touches of black licorice, ginger, grapefruit, lemon, and clove. Unique tasting.
M- Light and citrusy. Crisp up front. Spicy/ gingery body and a thick sweet finish.

Overall- Very odd tasting. Not horrible but just unique. The licorice, ginger, clove, citrus aroma doesn't do it for me.
