Het Labryint is a cross twixt a Belgium Café, a French Restaurant & a Victorian Toy Museum. A kind of; “Drink, Eat, Play and be Merry”. And in addition, it houses a local museum of artefacts from nearby archaeological digs at Mount Kemmel (also see; De Alverman, Kemmelberg). Oh, and…did I also mention that it houses a Gallery? Oh, Oh…and that outside it has a Labyrinth, I know you are surprised at the last one aren’t you?! Located on the side of a lovely quiet pleasant triangular shaped village green, that even has an octagonal wooden bandstand. Labryint is in a picturesque village and housed in beautiful old looking premises that appears to retain many of its original fittings. As you enter the building, the bar is in the room on the right hand side, through a door that separates it from a long tiled corridor that leads to the Ladies and Gents Restrooms. You cannot help feel like a child when in this Bar. I am not sure if it is the fact that the "echoey" high-ceilinged one room bar reminded me of my old school days, or the fact that many of the Wooden Tables have games on them. Drinking beer and playing games from your childhood may sound strange–but it does become addictive. About 40-50 beers, a small but solid range including De Bie/Van Eecke and often French Beers. Kemmel is ~5km from the border, and the menu is French influenced. Ask for the English version, if needed. It contains local specialities which I always try, and ranges from snacks through to meals, all reasonably priced. I had the Plat du Jour (Pork) with a Rodenbach. The service was good for Belgium, but some older war memorial visitors were a tad impatient!!, It does take time to prepare food in Belgium (Thankfully). Tip: Order your food as soon as you arrive if you intend to eat, and then play a game whilst drinking the relaxing Haacht Witbier or Rodenbach on draft!! And if you use any of the Games on the Tables–please leave them as you find them.
