Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Had on-tap at the brewery, and served in a shaker pint glass.

A: Reddish amber and hazy, with a two-finger off-white head with good retention. Average visible carbonation.

S: Toasted malts, with grassy, resin, and bitter grapefruit rind hops. A modest toffee sweetness.

T: Citrus up front - orange and grapefruit rind. Some resinous hops, with some grassy hops and a touch vegetal and dank character as well. Toasted malts, with toffee and a touch of caramel flavors. But while the malts are prominent, the hops do the heavy lifting for the flavors. Moderate rind and a touch of naked alpha bitterness in the hang. There's just a touch of light-struck skunk here as well, but I'm going to overlook that as I'm drinking it outside on a warm summer's day in the courtyard of the brewery - it's likely my fault for sitting out here.

M: Average body for style, with good carbonation sensation. The alcohol is a bit noticeable but within reason for style.

O: This was decent enough, though nothing of which I'll actively seek a repeat drink. For most of my experience with Barley Mow beers, that's about typical - solid, but ultimately forgettable. This wouldn't be something I'd turn my nose up at though.

NOTE:
About two months after the brewery outing, I picked up a 12 oz. can from a local bottle shop. Yes, it was a different night, different serving style, etc. But there was quite a bit more caramel sweetness in the malts from the can, and not nearly the bright citrusy hops the draft version had. I do wonder if it might be a little old – but I bought it recently and have kept it cold since. As Barley Mow has made the (very questionable) decision not to date their cans, I refuse to give them a pass for an old can on the shelves.
The rating given is for my experience with the draft version at the brewery. But if I was rating solely from the can it would be significantly lower - no more than a 3.5/5.

From an undated can, though this sku is new around here. Pours a hazed red dyed amber with billowing khaki colored head, settling slowly to a thick cap leaving big blobs of lace strewn about. Smell: pine, caramel, grapefruit, weedy strawberry plant. Taste: pine, strawberry jam on honey wheat bread, lemon and grapefruit. Body is a bit thin, watery midsip, finish is oily hop. It's OK, finish is messy, aroma is underpowered, but the flavor profile has potential. Needs some work.

Poured from a 12 oz can, into a Cigar City pint glass.Beautiful artwork on the can!!!

Creamy, off white / light khaki colored head, that stands 3 fingers tall.Consists of small to large bubbles, and leaves a nice lacing on the glass.Very good head retention.Deep, hazy, red / amber in color with distorted light showing through the glass, and what appears to be very small traces of sediment floating around.Moderate / medium amounts of fast moving carbonation.

On the nose i get a perfect balance of woodsy / piney hops, and sweet malts.I'm also picking up some caramel and spice notes, but these are dominated by malt and pine hops.

The palate follows the nose with a perfect balance of woodsy, piney hops, and sweet malts. On the back end I get some spice that lingers on the tongue, along with the piney hops.A little bit of caramel in the middle, although that is a bit subdued in the palate.

The body is full and chewy, with a smooth yet slightly dry finish. You do get some carbonation floating around on the tongue, and it leaves a slightly chalky, yet somehow sticky at the same time mouth feel.

I've had this beer once before this review, and it is even better than I remember.I'm typically not a huge fan of red ale but this one is fantastic.Beautiful balance of hop and malt notes on the nose,as well as on the palate.Very nice mouth feel, plus looks great in the glass, and has an AWESOME design on the label. All around a TOP NOTCH beer.

12oz. can poured into a snifter. Nice label art!

Look: Good looking brew, amber/copper colored, clear, foamy head settles and rings my glass. Lacing clings to the side.

Smell: Bready yeast, caramel, and a bit of a pine hop aroma floating around.

Taste: Nice bitterness smooths out the caramel and doughy malt flavors, comes together clean. Easy to drink, smooth.

Feel: Moderate level of carbonation, nice smooth, creamy mouthfeel.

Overall: A nice , easy drinking red ale. Has a decent amount of bitterness, that seems like a necessary addition to bring everything together.

Pours a hazy coppery reddish orange color with white head. Pine, bread, grass, and caramel malt on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied and chewy. Finishes with pine, malt, and bread.

I bought a can of the Huntsman whilst in Fort Lauderdale to take on a cruise. It poured a hazy amber with thin white head that left some lace. The scent was bitter. The taste was sweet caramel malt with slight bitter finish. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with good carbonation. Overall it was decent.
