Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Boris pours black and opaque like a moonless sky over Siberia. Eight different malts bring a complex aroma and flavor of chocolate, coffee and roasty sweetness. Just in case the winter gets too cold, we brewed this giant spider to 10% abv. So grab your snifter and ushanka and enjoy.

2012 vintage

a - poured a one finger thick dark brown head into a snifter that left a thin ring. the body was dark black.
s - clean and cool aroma with a hint of chocolate.
t - coffee, roasty, smoky and peaty. the finish was very astringent coffee.
m - thin body.
o - very disappointing RIS. thin, more like a coffee stout than a RIS.

Pours a deep, velvety black body, with trimmings of a chocolate brown head. The aroma is largely chocolatey, with a slight fruitiness and anise notes kicking in, but no real malt coming in. The taste is super chocolatey and semi-sweet, I can't quite get a grasp on whether this is beer or alcoholic chocolate milk. The feel is fairly smooth, with a tingle of alcohol warmth keeping you company on the way down. Altogether, an okay beverage, but I can't help but feel that it misses the mark on true imperial stouts.

Appropriately dark for an imperial stout. 1 cm dark tan head. Smell is somewhat sweet and malty but not very aromatic. Taste is very roasty and surprisingly bitter and hoppy for the style. Alcohol is apparent. Mouthfeel is nice an chewy, which is what I expect from an RIS but the finish leaves a coating that lingers long after you swallow. Enjoyable, but a bit too bitter to be a regular for me.
