This seems a nicely unique ale and to my mind it is really unlike other SweetWater brews. The beautiful red has a big malty and fruity nose with a hint of spice. But it doesn't taste "fruity." It is unique in that it has the big sweet malty character of a Belgian-style, but somehow at the very same time has a crisp hopiness. Both are present throughout. There is a surprise lingering hop character that is a bit like an IPA. I look forward to trying this a second time. This could be my new favorite from this brewery.

The body of the beer was clear, and a shade of orange-brown I can describe as auburn. The head was relatively modest, estimated at one finger thick. The aroma displayed the unmistakable spicy sweet signature of Belgian yeast. This smelled like cherries, white pepper, orange zest, and coriander. The taste was fruity and spicy with flavors of apple, banana, pear, clove, saffron, naval orange, and some toffee were present. The finish was very dry and quite floral. There was a good deal of complexity in the taste, but the body was quite thin, and I wish there was more heft present here. The aftertaste was spicy but faded quickly. Easy to enjoy this beer on a winter night, but you are going to need more than one, if you want it to keep you warm at night.

Clear chestnut color with a small creamy head. Belgian yeast aromas mostly: clove, bubblegum, and a little cherry along with some nutty malts. Flavor is a spicier and rougher...peppercorns, light candy sugar, dried flowers, and earthiness. Very raw and yeasty. Medium bodied with a nice texture. Not good.

Appearance: Though appearing clear, the hue is a very dark russet tone topped with a nicely frothed, light ivory-hued head. Speckled laceworks.

Smell: Atop the heavy toast and fruity esters the aroma is predominately phenolic with a punchy spiciness of pepper and cracked clove.

Taste: Well-toasted bread crusts and a flavor of dark caramel, though not particularly much sweetness is involved. Nearing hint of roast. Herbal hops, medium-light bitterness. Fruity embellishes of raisin, fig, and berries. Earthy, sharp, peppery phenolic spiciness that hits hard and fast, leaving it somewhat astringent. Drying, spicy, smooth finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Reasonably smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: Pass.

As inspiration extends from central Georgia, their flirtation with Belgian styles hits a crescendo with a "red" ale that's something of dubbed ale and something of amber.

Spinnerbait pours a hazy rust hue, topped with a fluffy patina with medium-firm persistence. With the nose hovering above, a spicy tone takes root- cinnamon, pepper and a vinous wine tinge backs up a dry stone fruit flavor and aroma.

Steely caramel sweetness coats the early palate and invites earthy flavors of peanut skin, toast and grain to layer upon. But its that medley of soft raisin, date, and dry spice that steal the show. Trending dry, spicy and creamy with grain, the trailing taste is nutty and of fresh-kilned barley.

With the malty sweetness swiftly trailing, the spices and grain stand tall. Boosted with the high bubbly nature of the beer, the medium-bodied ale takes on the slim tang of rose wine but with the nutty and spicy aftertaste of Belgian dubbel.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a dark brownish red with a tiny soapy head leaving just a couple spots of lacing. No sign of a typical billowy, thick head one would expect on this style of beer.

The aroma somewhat makes up for the disappointing appearance. Nice yeasty esters of bread, banana, and clove. A bit light but could be worse.

The flavor closely follows the aroma with banana and clove. The signs of a red ale are sorely lacking here as any malt is buried. Some tiny hints of malt towards the finish but barely. Mouthfeel is this.

Overall, this one is a miss from Sweetwater. It is a decent attempt but it just misses the mark for me.

A: Reddish Brown in color, with a somewhat small amount of white head on top.

S: Some definite Belgian Character in this guy. Raisons, and something almost bitter-ish, perhaps licorice?

T: Clove, and some like fruity Belgian character. There is an odd bitterness to it.. earthy, and perhaps astringent. Less than great.

M: Medium in body, carbonation is somewhat high, although it doesn't have that bright effervescence typical of Belgian styles. The finish is definitely astringent.

O: Overall, not a great beer. I was excited to try something new, but this one isn't doing it for me. Belgian character is a good start, but the finish is very odd.

I like this beer. The problem is in the name.
Spinnerbait sounds like it might be a light crisp springtime brew to me, it's not though. It's a hearty winter style ale full of tasty yeast and hints of spice.
Good beer, bad name.

As politely as I can, let me say this beer just isn't on point.
