SweetWater Hash BrownSweetWater Hash Brown
Notes: An "India Brown Ale".

Oh me oh my… what did we do?
We fired up the skillet to 420°, tossed in a sizzling concoction of 2-row, Wheat, Pale Chocolate, Cara-Brown and Midnight Wheat, then added in a hefty dose of hop hash and other dank-ish-ish-ish fixin’s to scatter, smother and cover this baby all the way.
Resiny, citrusy hops spice up the rich chocolate and caramel notes the malt brought to the mix, making this platter slide down the counter at 60 IBU’s.

Poured from the bottle it is a cloudy tea-brown with that fizzes and foams like crazy. Had to let it settle to finish the pour. The head lasts for a bit and continues with ample lacing on the glass. The aroma seems to combine pine and citrus hop notes and comes across peppery. The flavor does remind you of something that has been cooked in an iron skillet. There's plenty of hop flavor up front with caramel and chocolate notes to finish. The mouthfeel is medium, not overly carbonated (despite the amount of foam during the pour), smooth enough to drink and finishes dry and crisp.

L: caramel color, lacing tan head
S: flowery hops with a hint of maltiness
T: unbalanced, the malt and hops don't seem to compliment each other
F: good mouthfeel, slightly bitter finish
O: I wish it tasted more like it smelled

a: the color is a mixture of murky brown, dark ruby red, and light purple. it pours a real nice 3 finger solid off-white head that does not seem to be fading any time soon. a real nice looking beer

s: not quite what i was expecting right away. its juicy upfront: pineapple and light mango. behind that is a sweet caramel malt background with some brown sugar and a nice nutty note. there is also something kind of earthy/incense like in here as well. a very faint touch of roasted malt at the end

t: theres an interesting mix of flavors here that seem to be clashing a bit for dominance. i'm picking up a big punch of sweet caramel malt, slightly bitter chocolate, and a nice nutty flavor in here. there is also a noticeable piney bitterness in here as well. the tropical fruit that i picked up in the nose do not exist in the flavor, and while the initial flavor does seem to be sweet, the beer finishes with the bitter. a bit too bitter for a brown

m: solid, medium mouthfeel. carbonation level seems a tad high as well

o: the appearance of this beer is amazing, i wish i enjoyed the rest as much. its a bit too bitter for a brown, and is lacking the malt depth that i like from the style. i'm sure many people will enjoy it, due to the hops, and its not a poorly made beer. for me, its just lacking that malt depth and the transition of flavors is not quite subtle enough

This has to be one of if not the most bitter beers I've ever tasted. I couldn't finish it.

First had poured from 12-oz. bottle, stamped best if enjoyed by 11/17/15,
into clear plastic wine cup. Infused with hop hash, this is not a classic brown ale, and all the better for it.

Like everything I've had from Sweetwater so far this beer pours out with a beautiful head with some nice lacing in the glass. Great dank smell but at first a little unsure of the taste. Smells like IPA tastes like a brown...brain couldn't compute at first! After a few sips in though everything fell into place. Great mouthfeel. Would definitely buy again.

Sweetwater Brewing Co. "Hash Brown"
12 fl. oz. can, coded "11/06/16 and sampled on 09/12/16
$2 @ Acme, Media, PA

Notes: Nice enough color, deep russett brown. Seems hazy (ah, I see, it's "can conditioned"). Fluffy head of khaki holds remarkably well. Nice lacing. Aroma displays piney, resinous, and delicately citrusy hops over a chocolatey and nutty malt base. In the mouth it's somewhere between medium and light-medium in body. Moderately crisp. The flavor is fuller than the aroma suggests with much more graininess to the malt, and a more solid hop attack with includes a note of orange. Solidly bitter but balanced. Dry finish with more of the citrusy notes rising. In the end it's not as dank or resinous as I thought it would be, but perhaps that has to do with age, although it's still within its "BIEB date".

Appearance: Deep brown glass darkens towards it's core and sports a finger and a half of rocky sticky foam.

Aroma: Sweet brown sugar base with a firm fresh hop citric note. Inviting.

Taste: Close your eyes and it's a standard west coast IPA. But, there's a roasted toffee ribbon in the sweetness, just a flash of ash, a bit of grape skin tannin, enough character to make the package something different.

Mouthfeel: Frothy, medium light body with high carbonation makes it foam in your mouth. Going to have to let it settle down a bit. Very oily finish triggers a chew.

Overall: Big flavor, mostly hop driven with a few hints of darkness, but not enough to move toward American Strong or Barleywine. I think it comes down to a personal preference on this one. Well made, only real flaw is the carbonation level, which may be intentional to lighten the package up and feed that big attractive head.

12oz bottle from a Kroger: This one pours a murky brown color. It has a bit of a tan head on it, that leaves some lacing. Nose is a good mix. Hops up front, but not overpowering everything else. Roasted malts, nuttiness and some woodiness. The hops have mainly citrus and pine notes. The taste is good. Lots of a hop bite to it. Chocolate and roasted malts are also evident. Also some of the nuttiness. Nice beer!

The medium brown body was clear, and the head that formed was a little under two fingers thick, and durable. The aroma was a lot closer to an IPA than a brown ale, as the hop infusion provided smells of grapefruit and pine. There was a hint of caramel in the aroma as well. The taste was quite liberally hopped, providing a strong bitter flavor up front. The malt provided a nutty sweetness that became more dominant in the finish. The aftertaste was astringent and bitter. The body was medium dense and the feel silky. This was a a much more hop dominant beer than I first anticipated.
