Notes / Commercial Description:
Hazy Imperial IPA. After 4 months of tilling and and hoeing, Farmer MacDanknugs was cockeyed with anticipation, ready to reap his reward of fresh sticky nugs. Firing up his supercharged John Beere, ol’ MacDank blazed straight down to plow some primo Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe, harvesting the funkiest hop buds to cap off this succulent unfiltered 8% Double IPA. Our farmer drifted into a happy haze from the aromas of grapefruit, passion fruit and orange, daydreaming of the juicy brew to come.

First had poured from pint can, stamped on bottom BIEB “01/07/18,” into tulip pint. Dank, juicy, sticky and fruity, I like big IPAs and I can not lie.

A: Pours a hazy medium to dark burnt orange in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate dark golden yellow + amber colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall sudsy foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a couple of medium sized patches of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Slightly heavier than moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of tropical/mango, tropical/papaya, citrus/grapefruit, pine/resin, and citrus/grapefruit pith hops over the top of slightly grainy biscuit malts with a light amount of caramel sweetness.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of caramel + biscuit + grainy malts with a moderate amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by slightly stronger than moderate flavors of tropical/mango, tropical/papaya, citrus/grapefruit, pine/resin, and citrus/grapefruit pith hops which impart a light to moderate amount of bitterness which fades away fairly quickly leaving a light lingering sweet fruity hop flavor.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Initially slightly chewy with a lightly sticky finish with a hint of dryness.

O: Easy to drink with very well hidden alcohol and a nice complex hop flavor + aroma combination. Enjoyable.

16oz tulip. Dark honey colored, nice billowy head on the pour and tacky lacing throughout.
Smells a little dank, fruity, with a bread/grain base up front. Tastes the same, there are some easy GF and fruit hops going on, with a grainy backbone carrying the load. MF is medium at best, but not thin or watery, with no lingering bitterness.
Overall, I was a little caught off guard by the flavors in this beer. Not in a bad way at all. I really liked the taste, and flavors throughout Nugs. I'm currently looking for more!

Oddity: On my 3rd beer pour, I sipped the foam, and could've sworn that I tasted bubblegum. I tried mutiple times, but was unable to replicate it. Yeah, that's me.

My son had four 16 oz. cans of this waiting for me when I visited him in Charlotte, NC. Billed as an 8% Imperial Red Ale ( and it’s damned close red), this entry into Sweetwater’ Dank Tank Series is the best IPA I’ve had from this brewery. True to its description on the label , it’s fresh—especially in the nose where citrus and tropical fruits come through loud and clear. And it’s also sticky, both in the glass lacing and on the palate at the finish. Some pleasant piney notes dance through as well. Big malt character, too, but the hops are the stars. I doubt this is one you’d want to age too long, but my guess is that if you’re a DIPA fan of the New England style, this Beer won’t be around long enough to age. And if you’re like me, you probably won’t want to share it, either. Big, bold Beer that’s worth picking up if you can find it.

Best by 1/7/18. 16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy and cloudy burnt golden with a big creamy white head that slowly falls leaving great thick retention and sticky frothy lacing. The aromas have a nice blend of tropical and citrus notes, but it's probably more on the tropical side. Hints of bread and crackers. Malts are there. The aromas are subtle, but it still smells really nice. The flavors have nice tropical and citrus fruit flavors. A nice amount of pine sap. Mild spiciness. Really nice hop flavors. Solid bitterness. Malts are there, but the hops shine. Alcohol basically goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's on the lighter of full-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's fluffy, smooth and fun to drink.

This is a pretty nice IPA. Nice hop profile. Possibly the best hoppy brew that I've had from SweetWater, to date. Enjoyable stuff.
