A: Single finger, frothy, rapidly dissipating head with hazy golden color.

S: Very earthy. some malty and grainy aromas. Not getting the sweet smells others describe.

T: Taste follows the flavor with a very earthy hop taste. Mild bitterness in the aftertaste. Pepper notes.

M: Libght bodied with moderate carbonation. Thicker than a typical pilsner

Overall: This beer blurs the outer boundaries of what I am familiar with for a pilsner. I like that it is different, especially since I am not as much of a pilsner fan, it mixes things up.

Tasted On: 07-06-2011
Freshness: Best by 08-22-2011
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle
Glassware: Pilsner glass
Purchased: Single from J. Barleycorn, Nashville

A: Mostly clear, straw-colored beer with a creamy white head 4 fingers high. Fair lacing on the glass. Lively carbonation.

S: Aromas are dominated by citrusy hop characteristics; also spicy and fruity notes.

T: Crisp, bitter flavors are up front, with little malt presence. Also detected some sort of off flavors that were unappealing.

M: Medium to high carbonated feel with a bitter/sour after taste.

O: An interesting beer - I think the ale years gives it a unique twang, but the taste was not something that would make me seek it out again.

TY 2 Betsona for this one!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a HS Pint Glass

A - Pours a golden straw color with rapid carbonation forming a nice pillow'y' head.

S - Nice Floral/Earthy hops with a mild whiff of sweet malt. Some grain (bread) but mostly mild grassy with a hint of heat.

T - Very mild working towards an aggressive finish with great carbonation. Some spice (pepper) maybe a nice light touch of roasted malt. Semi-strong citrus flavor through out. Well balanced having the hops not leading malt, vice versa.

M - Almost jubilant with exceptional carbonation. Fine, thin lacing but still "brewing" off the bottom of the glass. Fair retention affords this beer a lively approach to one's palate.

O - Easily a session beer which holds it's own in the Pils category. This beer doesn't take you to any extreme as it is a simple version which delivers a great balance of Hops and Malt, with whatever chemistry they used to hold the edge. IMHO, this is a very medium to light and easy drinking beer which won't let the buyer down

Poured from 12oz bottle. Thanks for the beer betsona!

A- Pours a semi-hazed golden straw yellow color. Two finger white head shows medium retention. Nice streaks of lace all over the walls of the glass.

S- The aroma was quite simple which I expected it to be. Pretty much from the get go there was a nice pils malt base with hints of grain to it. Light earthy grassy hops come in the ending and add a little extra to the aroma. Everything was light but not muted. Alcohol was also crisp and I liked it.

T- Pils malt right off the bat with hints of pepper in the mix. Middle shows a little grain bill to it but nothing that is screaming adjuncts to it. Ending is more of the clean pils malt with a fresh grassy hop that is light but balanced out the beer nice. Alcohol is crisp, clean, and light in the ending.

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Pils malt, light pepper, and grassy hops are left on the palate. Aftertaste is light alcohol, pils malt, and grassy hops. Well balanced for the style. No off flavors at all in the beer. Light alcohol drying on the palate.

O- This beer was a very nice simple pilsner. I enjoyed the fact that they didn't overdo the hopping this which lead it to be a very clean and easy drinking beer. Sweetwater I think has a balance on making both easy drinking beers along with huge over the top beers.

Has an aroma of citrus along with a grassiness and a bit of grain. Pretty standard stuff for style.

Starts off a bit citrusy and peppery spicy in the body. Turns into a nice bit of sweet grassiness....finishing with a bitterness piercing at the back of the tongue with moderate intensity.

Average...a little spicy, but otherwise nothing that strays too far from your typical pils. Drinkable.

A slight notch above your everyday pilsner. No adjunct corn sweetness and a light floral hoppiness that differentiates it. Its a pale hazy yellow with thin white head that fades fast and leaves minimal, spotty sea foam lace. The smell is crisp, dry biscuit malts with faint floral and earthy hops. The taste is dry biscuits and floral notes. Crisp, dry, and refreshing. Nicely done pilsner, but nothing that stands out.

A: Cloudy yellow similar to a hefe. SMall white head that disappeared quickly. Huge slow rising bubbles make the beer look enticing.

S: Crisp straight forward pale malt. Mild but sharp hop scent. Crisp and clean.

T: Citrus, spicy, dry up front followed by a great crisp apple like sweetness from the malt. Nice balance here.

M: Spicy and full. Great carbonation and very clean and crisp.

O: Great session beer. Nice clean and crisp. Great beer for a hot summer day.

Received from OhYesILoveBeer in a homebrew trade. Thanks Van!

Poured into a Le Cheval Blanc pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy straw gold with a two fingered stark white head that drops to near nothing after a few minutes.

Aromas of grainy malt, earthy hops.

Flavors of classic grainy malt, classic earthy noble hops. Finish is short, with a light bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium/light, with a nice light bitterness and good level of carbonation.

Overall, a good representation of a classic german pils. Very nicely done.

From the Tackle Box Mix Pack

Bottle: Best by 08/14/11

Poured from 12oz. bottle into Stone pint glass.

A: Pours a very clear yellow with a .5 finger white head. Very frothy but subsides at medium pace.

S: I'm picking up some zesty floral hops with a little funky yeast. Seems pretty dry though.

T: Light bitter hops with a malty dryness. No real floral notes that I picked up from nose and the yeasty isn't exerting itself. A little citrus peeks through the more my palate gets adjusted.

M: Very light bodied. Crisp and smooth with a high carbonation. Average dry oat malts left on the tongue.

O: Meh. I think it's pretty average and no real notes on taste or smell really jump out.

12oz. bottle served into a pint glass

Pours a pretty typical golden yellow for a pilsner. It looks fairly bubbly like a pils should, but the amount and activity w/r/t the head is unimpressive. Barely a finger at its peak, the white foam dissipates very quickly. Average looking pilsner.

This seems like an average pils on the nose as well. I can make out a generous portion of Saaz hops, and some biscuit like crisp malt aromas. That's about it. Well, there's some unexpected yeast aromas coming up. I say unexpected because usually pilsners don't come across as obviously yeasty. This is less clean than most proper lagers, and it suffers in score as a result.

OK, I'm not crazy. There's a definite ale yeast flavor here. This beer tastes like a pale ale that's been single-hopped with Saaz. Despite the pilsner malt base, it tastes like its been fermented with American pale ale yeast. It's got the proper hop level of a pilsner, but there's fruity esters that shouldn't be there. As a pilsner, this beer is too muddy and confused to succeed.

Road Trip feels fine enough on the tongue, though it does nothing to distinguish itself. Overall, this is a below average pilsner, primarily because of the spurious decision to ferment the beer with ale yeast of some kind. This is a fine enough summer drink when it comes in the Sweetwater variety pack, but this is certainly nothing to seek out on its own.

I had this one on tap at Tap in Atlanta….. Served in a standard pint, the beer is a hazy straw yellow with a clingy white head.

There are spices, malt and citrus in the nose.

The taste tracks the smell. Pepper, slightly grainy hops and more hop spice..

It has a slightly slick mouth. I thought it was an easy drinking representation of the style.

A: Pours a pale gold color with a frothy head that fades quickly.

S: Aromas of lemon, orange, straw and a bit of honey mingle together.

T: Sweet citrus flavor shows up right away fading into dry cracker flavor. Finishes with just a hint of malty aftertaste.

O: Good solid brew here, this one is going to be a summer staple.

A - A crisp golden hue with a fairly nice head.

S - Citrus, hops, and very earthy. Although it sounds odd I can almost sense a little dirt, in a good spring garden way.

T - Much like the smell this is dominated by earthy tones. I can almost hear this beer telling me to go mow the yard or work outside as I drink it. Citrus kicks in as it goes down.

M - Very thin, but in a good pilsner way. Very drinkable.

O - A pretty good pilsner by sweetwater. I could drink multiple of these in the spring and summer.

Part of the "tackle box" sampler pack...a pilsner made with ale yeast? OK

A: Pours a clear straw color with a big, soapy, fluffy white head. Awesome retention in the snifter

S: The nose is wheaty, grainy, hints of German yeast, followed by tart orchard fruit. Interesting for sure

T: Grassy/earthy hops giving a small bitter bite, more notes of German yeast, grainy, and slight fruit to finish

MF/O: Prickly carbonation, light in body, with a fruity and wheaty finish

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A - Light, honey colored with a thin white head that quickly fades.

S - Wheat and corn.

T - Wheat and barley, some slight banana.

D - Low carbonation. Light and thin in the mouth.

O - Uhg. Not much here. Pretty bland.

Pale, straw in color. White head that leaves a lot of spongy lace.

Aroma was lightly malty, nutty sweet. Unique and not bad.

Taste is bitter, hoppy, malty, nutty, sweet and rich. Balanced and hoppy.

Crisp, lighter, though creamy to a point. Slick with colid carbonation.

Overall, I really enjoyed this! Not hugely aromatic, but extremely tasty and yummy! A nice and unique German Pils!

S A little yeasty, estery aroma, low hop aroma. 3.5

T German pilsner like in aroma, but czech pils like in flavor and hopping.  Sharp bite from hops. Some astringency at the end. 4

M Thin body, dry, carbonation seems a little higher than a typical Pils, but good. 4

D A very good drinking beer 3.5.

Great brew. Not as bitter as I expected. Clean finish easily could finish a 6-pack on any given day. This brew has just enough bite to keep you on your toes. Sweetwater has yet to come out with a brew IMO where you say well it is sorta like... they are all different from each other. Another great brew from the best brewery in the south. Keep them coming guys

Poured into a Pils glass. Appearance is translucent straw with a 2-finger, soapy white head. Moderate layered lacing.

The smell is blatantly herbal with grainy malts. The taste is more subtle than the smell--herbs, sour grains, floral with a hint of sweetness, perhaps vanilla. Mouthfeel is less carbonated than I expected, but still rather crisp.

This is refreshing beer. Nothing really stands out, but I could drink a couple of these in a session.

A - A clear, golden straw color. It looks just like a Pilsner, not seeing the Ale side of it. A bit of head retention and slight lace on the glass.

S - Grain and slight citrus aroma. Not a very strong aroma.

T - Slightly bitter. I was expecting a little more sweetness. The grain malts dominate. Little hop flavor.

M - Highly carbonated.

D - It seems low ABV, and it is a fairly smooth beer. A decent 6 pack for a day on the lake, but nothing here is all that special.

A: Pale gold color (deeper than straw). Poured a 2 finger fluffy white head that dissipated to a lumpy cap. Decanted lightly. Laced in thin wavy rings (not consistently).

S: Crackery malt. Faint fruit and citrus aroma with a little pepper/spice.

T: Sweet crackery malt and wet grains up front. Transitions quickly to a lingering bitter that's more dry than crisp.

M: Light body. Moderate-to-ample carbonation. Finish is dry and sharply bitter

O: Very drinkable. Good malt character. Not as crisp and refreshing as many of the style. Bet this would be good with dish if wanted a relatively "light" beer but still wanted to cut some spice or fat/oil.

Pours a very pale/transparent yellow with a one finger white head that quickly falls.

Lemon and grass notes upfront. Slight fruit in the background.

Taste of mildly bitter lemon with some grassy flavor towards the end. There's some malt sweetness there but it isn't dominant. As it warms more of the lemon flavor begins to be more prominent. Not sure of the ABV but there's no trace of any alcohol to be found here.

Much like the appearance, the body is fairly light. Medium/high amounts of carbonation make this a refreshing drink. Not so much in the way of complexity but nothing if not a decent refreshing drink for a hot summer night.

"It started out as a pilsner" reads the label. That may be but the end product is a decent lightly hopped pale with a slight bitterness against a light malt backbone. Sadly there wasn't much that stood out about this beer. While not "bad," I don't know that there's anything here that makes this beer memorable. If you're looking for something that's light, crisp and easy to drink, you can't go wrong here. If I had to pick just one word to describe this beer, it would have to be "inoffensive," and that's not always a good thing.

SweetWater Road Trip 12oz into pint. Pours yellow, like a bit of real beer into a glass of water.. Has a small 1/4" white head that doesnt stick around. Smells of steamed veggies and other adjuncts in the corn department. Tastes like a adjunct lager, honestly one of the lower grade ones. A touch of pale and crystal malts, and a bit of noble presence. This is another that I wont be getting again from SW, these summer creations just aren't up to par with the rest of the others. Overall, if you get it from a pal, or an extra in a trade its worth a shot, but if you see it in the store and are pondering on purchasing, your best bet is to grab whatever is sitting beside it, even if its a pack of swill in my opinion. Cheers!

12 oz bottle into a pint glass @ Rooster's Beak.

A: It is light golden in appearance with a half-finger of white head.

S: Pale malts, light citrus, and a little hoppiness.

T: It is light and flavorful; citrus, cereal malts, and coriander.

M: The body is light with medium-heavy carbonation and a refreshingly crisp finish.

O: This is a solid Summer beer all around.

Got a decent head however is was pretty weak and died quickly. Coloring is light yellow that I didn't expect at first but now I see this is a pilsner thinking it was a pale ale. Smell is sweet and slightly citrusy. I always have trouble picking up what to describe the sweentess as in lagers and pilsners. I guess corn? Anyways has quite a nice pilsner smell. Taste is sharp and pleasantly bitter. Has a nice underlined sweetness in the aftertaste. Is this beer a hybrid? The label kind of suggested it was. But it really does have a pale ale quality to it. One of the more flavorful Pilsners I have encountered. Carbonation is cranked up pretty high but I actually like it in this style. This beer is solid! Hats off to Sweetwater for making such a tasty pilsner for the summer.
