Very Good
420 Strain Chocolope Stout420 Strain Chocolope Stout
Notes: The 420 Strain is back in black with a chocolaty stout and head-turning aroma. Our unholy trinity of hops, strain-specific terpenes and natural hemp-type flavors complement a roasty malt backbone, resulting in a dreamy medley of mouth-watering flavors: Tropical fruit on the inhale, coffee on the exhale, gooey chocolate all the way through.

A thanks to the sultan of stouts, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of weed, little else. Taste is roasted malts, smoke, pot at the finish, a bit dry. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall it ain't bad, but I really got almost no chocolate in the aroma or flavor.

A: opaque; very dark brown with a hint of mahogany at the edges; 1+ finger medium brown head that receded to a splotchy cap; very nice lacing;

S: very aromatic and, from a distance, it's all dank weed; with my nose in the glass, I got mint and eucalyptus as well;

T: deeply roasted grain up front, with dank weed coming in at the middle and staying through the finish; the weed is always in the background; mild bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: very interesting;

These next several are going to be Bottles (Eeek!) of varying types, each one sort of dovetailing with the next. If past history is any indication, I'll be bound up better than eating a block of cheese after all of this!

From the Bottle: "Limited Release"; "Brewed with Chocolate"; "The 420 Strain is back in black with a chocolaty stout and head-turning aroma. Our unholy trinity of hops, strain-specific terpenes and natural hemp-type flavors complement a roasty malt backbone, resulting in a dreamy medley of mouth-watering flavors: Tropical fruit on the inhale, coffee on the exhale, gooey chocolate all the way through."; "A Strange New Strain Indeed".

I almost feel like I should be saving this for M, y'know, 4-20 Day. I have other plans for that day & so I Pop!ped the cap on this Bottle (!) & started a slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. I watched in rapt fascination as it foamed up to from two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, mocha-colored head with very good retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44), with cola highlights at the edges. Nose smelled like a bag of skunk weed! Say, where did I score this beer, anyway?!? I don't have a scrip for the local dispensary! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was … amusing. I was mentioning the idea of an amuse-bouche (French for "amusment of the mouth", usually as a snack or an hors d'oeuvre) to a high school classmate when she mentioned the Japanese term "kuchisabishii", defined as "when you're not hungry, but you eat because your mouth is lonely" earlier today. This beer's taste & mouthfeel were definitely making my mouth smile. It had a pleasant weed-like flavor along with a bittersweet chocolatiness. This, for me, was where they got it just right. I despise cloyingly sweet stuff, but they managed to avoid such in this beer. It was VERY MUCH a liquified special brownie!

They don't teach HomeEc any more, but when I took Foods 1 through 4, we used a LOT of herb in our recipes. Man, you want to get really mellow, start in on edibles. The real trick is to stir some of it into melting butter, then use that for the brownies, cookies, cakes, etc. I considered myself a bit of a "head", but one afternoon, following getting baked on baked goods, I was incoherent!

I liked the way that all of the flavors - terpenes, chocolate & coffee really meshed. The coffee came in at the end, keeping the whole thing semi-dry. Finish was definitely semi-dry to dry. Fudging fantastic! YMMV.

Drinking this at my local tap house, Tapped in Greenville NC.
On tap poured into a pint glass
Appears brownish, almost black. Nice head and lacing.
Smells dank, weedy, chocolatey, the dankness is most noticeable on the nose.
Tastes like a chocolatey, coffee, sweet pot brownie.
Mouth feel is medium light for the style.
Overall, from the 420 Strain I liked the Hindu Kush better, but this is very good and I would definitely order again.

In celebration of all things that smell like Snoop Dog, SweetWater Brewing stray from their hoppy ways and impart the dankness of cannabis into a Chocolate Stout. Its basically a botanical baked good that pours from a bottle.

Very dark brown and a shade off of black, the mocha topped appearance leaps right out with the scent of weed right from the get-go. While a background of chocolate, coffee, cream and caramel fill the nose, the taste leads in with the exact same promises of mocha latte, caramel, chocolate cake and sweet cream.

As the lavish malt sweetness relaxes across the middle palate, the beer's medium-full body allows for high rate of drinkability despite its robust taste. Trending slightly more coffee, chicory and nutty than that of milk chocolate, the strong waft of hemp falls away quickly and the stout is just that on the late palate. ...stout.

Finishing bittersweet with chocolate and light roast, the hops show a moderate bitterness that lingers slightly past the sweetness on route to a coffee filled linger and a brief return of Mary Jane in its retro-olfactory action.

12 oz bottle purchased from Hop City in Birmingham.
Best by 3/30/20.
Smokestack snifter.

Has a shiny brown to black body with a creamy head of 3 fingers, beige, which recedes to 1/2 finger and has a lot of lace connecting to the body.

Aroma is something like pot brownies. Chocolate and very slight herbal cannabis, and some slight citrus rind. Hints of roasted malts bordering on coffee, and more fudgy brownie.

Flavor brings roasted malt, cherry vanilla coke, chocolate malt-o-meal, some herbal notes, slight grapefruit flesh, and slight coffee. Resins build on the palate. It's a surprisingly complex beer for what it is, but I keep thinking it's a porter.

That brings me to the feel. It's slick and easy but comes across more like a robust porter than a full-on stout. I want to call it Chocolope Porter and that seems to stick better for me.

Overall it's a very tasty beer and initially I had considered going back and buying a full sixer, but as I'm finishing this beer, it doesn't have staying power and gets a little boring after awhile. Still a cool beer to try. My personal favorite of the series is the Mango Kush, get some.

I love stouts. This stout is not easy to drink. It smells like weed. It has a light body more like a black lager. The flavor is bitter and burnt with notes of bong water and dry pine straw. I will never purchase it again.

I had a love-hate relationship with this beer...

...and at the end of the pint glass, I kinda just didn't really think it was all that great. It did look good with perfect blackness and tan head, it smell unique - grassy, licorice, and malty, but that's about it for this beer. The mouthfeel was okay, light-bodied and lightly carbonated but the taste - what can I say about this? It tasted grassy to me, yes grassy. So much so it was weird. Overall, it really wasn't representative of the style and I certainly won't be looking for this again.

Not really a Stout person (normally IPA) but had to try this new 420 Strain offering from Sweetwater Brewery. I must say I really liked this one, enough that I went out to find a case. A trip with a happy ending, what more can a guy ask for?

Pours mostly black or dark anyway some light can sneak through if its bright out. Nice two finger khaki head from an aggressive pour with good lacing.

Aroma is mostly the strain hops at least to start out as it dominates from pouring. After settling some light roasted notes, some chocolate notes and even lighter coffee hints. Being as I like the strain hop profile a lot I am calling it good.

Taste is bam pretty hop forward no surprise there. The strain dominates to start but after a couple of sips you noticed the lingering roasted notes more with added chocolate and a little sweetness to the mix. Again I might be biased as I love this hop profile.

Mouthfeel is medium with medium or a touch more carbonation levels.

Overall I like but as I have said I am biased, but if you like the 420 strain no reason you wont like this beer, if you don't not much reason to try it.

Don't understand the whole taste of marijuana in your beer thing..... Why not broccoli flavored beer as well? Oh, broccoli isn't "fun" in a beer. Anyhoo, if you like marijuana flavor, go for it. Tastes like it smells.

A pretty tasty Stout I wouldn't call it gooey chocolate but more of a bittersweet chocolate and roasty Stout with a sweet finish. With the hop profile it almost reminds me of a Black lager with a semi Smokey finish. Picked this up for about 2 bucks so I'm not really disappointed but it is pretty good.

The nose is very close to the weed smell of G13, which gave me a lot of pause before the first sip. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the taste. A nice, lighter bodied, roasty stout. Lingering weed taste well after the swallow but doesn’t detract from the overall beer. Solid but not something I would drink regularly

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body with an inch of light khaki-toned foam.

Smell: Presents a decently dank, light pungentness, as previous had in the IPA, but it feels bewildering slapped against a rather dry roastiness and modest bitterish cocoa hints.

Taste: Sweetish blend of richly toasty malts, chocolate (aided by the cocoa) with some slender, subtler roasty tones. As with its aroma, in rolls the dankness, the pungent quality which feels like a particularly odd partner, at least to me, for a sweetish chocolate stout. Like a big, tall glass of grilled cheese sandwich red wine, I went in thinking "whaaa?" and left, still thinking "whaaaa?"

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. A light smoothness to the overall mouthfeel.

Overall: The combination simply doesn't work for me, even though I feel I would've rather enjoyed the underlying beer without the "420 strain" deal. However, as a side note, the label design and embossed bottles are rather nice.

The 3rd release from Sweetwaters 420 strain series. Originally, the name Chocolope. Comes from a strain of marijuana. Known for its coffee and chocolate taste.

After opening the bottle. A faint scent of weed hits my nose. Poured black with a 2 finger dark beige head. The aroma is fresh weed. A little bit of chocolate but primarily fresh weed. The taste is dark chocolate, coco and hoppy bitterness.

As the beer warms. The hoppyness mellows in taste. Medium mouth feel. The roasted barley malts comes through at the end. Rich and creamy. I enjoy how the flavor profile changes as the beer warms up.

This is a solid hoppy chocolate stout. This beer isn't your traditional chocolate stout. The hoppyness is aggressive in the beginning but mellows over time. Overall, the flavor profile is a brownie. A pot brownie. Well played, Sweetwater. Cheers!

"Best if enjoyed by 12/24/19"; drank 10/16/19 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance.

A violent pour yielded a huge tan head; frothy lace.

Black coffee, skunk spray & mild chocolate syrup notes in the nose. I get the "420" reference here...

Medium mouthfeel.

Orange citrus & mild chocolate syrup flavors up front; mild skunk spray notes on the finish.

More of a "black IPA" than a stout; it's OK but not worth tracking down.

Dark, opaque, with a frothy tan head, recedes to a nice film, lacy; The aroma is not strong; Tangy mouthfeel, nice carbonation - not all that common in stouts. The taste hints of chocolate, but there is something else, too.

Not a bad stout, as stouts go. I might could buy this one again.

“Back in black” indeed. From a pint glass on tap at my local grocery store growler bar ($2.50/pint). A very dark brown almost black with a cream colored head. lots of cream colored lacing. Wow. The weed scent is upfront in this one; a bit unexpected in the stout. I must qualify that I’ve enjoyed Sweetwater’s IPA weed varieties but this one may have a bit more cannabis nose than some of the others. I also pick up the presence of toasty malt. The taste is chocolate, malt, and weed. Maybe the most interesting beer of the brewery’s 420 strains. The taste has a bit more bitterness than typical of stouts but I suppose all bets are off when Sweeteater gets their buzz on. Overall, I enjoyed this beer. Top of the hat to the boys in Atlanta.
