Very Good
420 Strain Chocolope Stout420 Strain Chocolope Stout
Notes: The 420 Strain is back in black with a chocolaty stout and head-turning aroma. Our unholy trinity of hops, strain-specific terpenes and natural hemp-type flavors complement a roasty malt backbone, resulting in a dreamy medley of mouth-watering flavors: Tropical fruit on the inhale, coffee on the exhale, gooey chocolate all the way through.

Poured into a narrow pint glass: color is dark brown to black, head is tan with fine to small bubbles, head presents 1 finger thick and dissipates to solid top with some lacing.

Smell is the cannabis like burst at first, softening to sweeter malts and cocoa, hint of roast, no coffee.

Taste is loses the cannabis strength, and malts are less sweet and roasty, but flavors include cocoa, roast, light malt sweetness.

Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, low/moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness and lingering bite.

Overall an interesting beer - big burst of cannabis on the can crack and through the aroma, but limited flavor and stronger sweet stout flavor, but an interesting one to try.

Can dated 3/13/21 into pint glass. Pours a dark brown with a huge light tan head. Not much lacing. Initial impression is muted chocolate, roasted malts, and a touch of coffee. Mouthfeel is quite thin for a Stout. Finish is slightly bitter and actually dry, which again is unusual for a Stout. Overall, it's interesting but not something I'd revisit.

Well, what do we have here? This seems like it'll be an interesting experiment. A roasty stout brewed with chocolate and terpenes. As a pothead, I'm really intrigued by this. I'm too excited to add anything else so let's just jump in

Pours a very dark cola brown with 3 fingers of tan head that slowly fades to a cap and leaves decent lacing

Holy hell. The nose on this is akin to smelling a fresh bag of weed, with a nice added sweetness. I'm picking up aromas of dank bud, earthy hops, milk chocolate, lightly acidic coffee, and roasted malt

The taste isn't quite as weedy, but still damn unique especially up on the front palate. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting oily hops, dark malt, caramel, and a hint of citrus. The swallow brings notes of roasted malt, sweet cream, milk chocolate, smooth coffee, and a touch of weed on the aftertaste

A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick and somewhat sticky beer. Finishes mostly dry and slightly dank

How does this only have an average of 3.8? Not that it's mind-blowingly good or anything, but it's so unique and everything in here is just solid. I'll get it again

Pours a deep dark mahogany with a caramel colored head.

Dank herbal hops, chocolate, and yeasty malt bread in the nose.

Taste is dank herbal hops followed by whole grain bread, slight caramel malt with a chocolate coating.

Bottom line is a good touch of roasted malt but the chocolate is missing. The weed smell is on the nose but doesn't transfer to the tongue. Overall, depth is missing from the flavor. Not bad, just nothing to seek out.

As a heathen, I'm drinking my current can of Chocolope Stout without pouring. Just straight from the can. However, this is my third or fourth time enjoying this fine beverage. No, it's not all today. This is my first beer of the evening. Anyway, I've poured this into a standard pint glass and into a Sam Adams glass on previous occasions. It's all good. Smooth, tasty, and a fantastic aftertaste. I'm afraid these go down way too fast, which at 6.4abv, could be a problem. Fortunately, I'm at home and I've nowhere to go tonight. Maybe a second beer from Sweetwater is in order.

12 oz can, best by date of 3/13/21.

Pours solid black with a creamy and sticky beige head.

Aromas of note include strong roast coffee with backing notes of chocolate and caramel.

Flavor is the coffee and roasted malt backbone. Moderate hop bite midway, chocolate sweetness lingers in the background throughout. Pleasing bitter finish, not terribly sticky on the palate, but begs another sip.

Medium body with moderate carbonation.

I pick up an odd aroma here and there that reminds me of something you’d smell when you’re drinking a Heineken, Becks or similar. None of those flavors are present, that aroma did catch me by surprise though.

All in all, a fine brew. Not a staple of the style by any means, but there are certainly worse interpretations.

Chocolate bong water.
Thankfully the chocolate note comes through after dealing with the smell/scent/aroma or I’d pass this off as a wink-wink novelty.
It’s prolly cool to throw one of these down to a dope smoking friend, but I personally prefer to keep the 2 thangs separate.
Kinda like ‘don’t put jalapeños in my IPA’.

C: Dark, Opaque, beautiful tight head, little carbonation with pretty good lacing on the glass.

S: Cannabis, Danky, Roasty, Chocolate, Black Coffee, Malty

T: Upfront is danky and weed tasting, immediately followed by a subtle but increasingly more intense malty roasted coffee and chocolate flavor, that is really good. Not boozy or spicy.

F: full-bodied, coats the mouth, heavy, creamy and dry finish

Overall: This beer is amazing, it combines the amazing Chocolope strain; a combination of Chocolate Thai and Cannalope Haze strains, that has a earthy and coffee like flavor. The beer also has a heavy roasted malts and coffee flavor, slightly bready, but full bodied and creamy. This beer is very good and one of my favorite combinations of strains with beer. I give this beer a tremendous 97, Cheers!

Pours with crazy head, not that aggressive a pour, effervescent mahogany with 3+ fingers of rocky mocha colored head. Good head retention & lacing

S: Smells of weed, cocoa shows up once warm

T: Some cocoa. smokeyness, dryness & cattyness up front. Dark chocolate, roastyness, cattyness & dryness as this warms, even a little charred grain bitterness.

MF: Medium body, fairly creamy carbonation

Solid stout, the weedy/catty aspect may be off putting for some, but it doesn't overpower the beer. Certainly improved as it warmed

A thanks to the sultan of stouts, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of weed, little else. Taste is roasted malts, smoke, pot at the finish, a bit dry. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall it ain't bad, but I really got almost no chocolate in the aroma or flavor.

S: very aromatic and, from a distance, it's all dank weed; with my nose in the glass, I got mint and eucalyptus as well;

T: deeply roasted grain up front, with dank weed coming in at the middle and staying through the finish; the weed is always in the background; mild bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: very interesting;

These next several are going to be Bottles (Eeek!) of varying types, each one sort of dovetailing with the next. If past history is any indication, I'll be bound up better than eating a block of cheese after all of this!

From the Bottle: "Limited Release"; "Brewed with Chocolate"; "The 420 Strain is back in black with a chocolaty stout and head-turning aroma. Our unholy trinity of hops, strain-specific terpenes and natural hemp-type flavors complement a roasty malt backbone, resulting in a dreamy medley of mouth-watering flavors: Tropical fruit on the inhale, coffee on the exhale, gooey chocolate all the way through."; "A Strange New Strain Indeed".

I almost feel like I should be saving this for M, y'know, 4-20 Day. I have other plans for that day & so I Pop!ped the cap on this Bottle (!) & started a slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. I watched in rapt fascination as it foamed up to from two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, mocha-colored head with very good retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44), with cola highlights at the edges. Nose smelled like a bag of skunk weed! Say, where did I score this beer, anyway?!? I don't have a scrip for the local dispensary! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was … amusing. I was mentioning the idea of an amuse-bouche (French for "amusment of the mouth", usually as a snack or an hors d'oeuvre) to a high school classmate when she mentioned the Japanese term "kuchisabishii", defined as "when you're not hungry, but you eat because your mouth is lonely" earlier today. This beer's taste & mouthfeel were definitely making my mouth smile. It had a pleasant weed-like flavor along with a bittersweet chocolatiness. This, for me, was where they got it just right. I despise cloyingly sweet stuff, but they managed to avoid such in this beer. It was VERY MUCH a liquified special brownie!

They don't teach HomeEc any more, but when I took Foods 1 through 4, we used a LOT of herb in our recipes. Man, you want to get really mellow, start in on edibles. The real trick is to stir some of it into melting butter, then use that for the brownies, cookies, cakes, etc. I considered myself a bit of a "head", but one afternoon, following getting baked on baked goods, I was incoherent!

I liked the way that all of the flavors - terpenes, chocolate & coffee really meshed. The coffee came in at the end, keeping the whole thing semi-dry. Finish was definitely semi-dry to dry. Fudging fantastic! YMMV.

Drinking this at my local tap house, Tapped in Greenville NC.
On tap poured into a pint glass
Appears brownish, almost black. Nice head and lacing.
Smells dank, weedy, chocolatey, the dankness is most noticeable on the nose.
Tastes like a chocolatey, coffee, sweet pot brownie.
Mouth feel is medium light for the style.
Overall, from the 420 Strain I liked the Hindu Kush better, but this is very good and I would definitely order again.

In celebration of all things that smell like Snoop Dog, SweetWater Brewing stray from their hoppy ways and impart the dankness of cannabis into a Chocolate Stout. Its basically a botanical baked good that pours from a bottle.

Very dark brown and a shade off of black, the mocha topped appearance leaps right out with the scent of weed right from the get-go. While a background of chocolate, coffee, cream and caramel fill the nose, the taste leads in with the exact same promises of mocha latte, caramel, chocolate cake and sweet cream.

As the lavish malt sweetness relaxes across the middle palate, the beer's medium-full body allows for high rate of drinkability despite its robust taste. Trending slightly more coffee, chicory and nutty than that of milk chocolate, the strong waft of hemp falls away quickly and the stout is just that on the late palate. ...stout.

Finishing bittersweet with chocolate and light roast, the hops show a moderate bitterness that lingers slightly past the sweetness on route to a coffee filled linger and a brief return of Mary Jane in its retro-olfactory action.

12 oz bottle purchased from Hop City in Birmingham.
Best by 3/30/20.
Smokestack snifter.

Has a shiny brown to black body with a creamy head of 3 fingers, beige, which recedes to 1/2 finger and has a lot of lace connecting to the body.

Aroma is something like pot brownies. Chocolate and very slight herbal cannabis, and some slight citrus rind. Hints of roasted malts bordering on coffee, and more fudgy brownie.

Flavor brings roasted malt, cherry vanilla coke, chocolate malt-o-meal, some herbal notes, slight grapefruit flesh, and slight coffee. Resins build on the palate. It's a surprisingly complex beer for what it is, but I keep thinking it's a porter.

That brings me to the feel. It's slick and easy but comes across more like a robust porter than a full-on stout. I want to call it Chocolope Porter and that seems to stick better for me.

Overall it's a very tasty beer and initially I had considered going back and buying a full sixer, but as I'm finishing this beer, it doesn't have staying power and gets a little boring after awhile. Still a cool beer to try. My personal favorite of the series is the Mango Kush, get some.

I love stouts. This stout is not easy to drink. It smells like weed. It has a light body more like a black lager. The flavor is bitter and burnt with notes of bong water and dry pine straw. I will never purchase it again.

I had a love-hate relationship with this beer...

...and at the end of the pint glass, I kinda just didn't really think it was all that great. It did look good with perfect blackness and tan head, it smell unique - grassy, licorice, and malty, but that's about it for this beer. The mouthfeel was okay, light-bodied and lightly carbonated but the taste - what can I say about this? It tasted grassy to me, yes grassy. So much so it was weird. Overall, it really wasn't representative of the style and I certainly won't be looking for this again.

Pours mostly black or dark anyway some light can sneak through if its bright out. Nice two finger khaki head from an aggressive pour with good lacing.

Aroma is mostly the strain hops at least to start out as it dominates from pouring. After settling some light roasted notes, some chocolate notes and even lighter coffee hints. Being as I like the strain hop profile a lot I am calling it good.

Taste is bam pretty hop forward no surprise there. The strain dominates to start but after a couple of sips you noticed the lingering roasted notes more with added chocolate and a little sweetness to the mix. Again I might be biased as I love this hop profile.

Mouthfeel is medium with medium or a touch more carbonation levels.

Overall I like but as I have said I am biased, but if you like the 420 strain no reason you wont like this beer, if you don't not much reason to try it.
