12 ounce pour - $3.50 at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur, Georgia.

Appearance: Very dark brown body, mahogany-hued at the edges, and capped by a half-inch, dark beige head.

Smell: Some toast, some roast, and firmly resinous in the nose with notes of citric fruit juices, red berries, and a half jigger of alcohol.

Taste: Fire-charred toast given a swipe of red currant jam and a pinch of brown sugar. Low sweetness overall. Florals, oranges, and grapefruits - pith included - with plenty of bitterness imparted. Resinous, grassy character alongside a shot of roasty instant coffee. Citrus juices, a sip of liquor, and still competently bitter on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation, there's some surprising crispness to it.

Overall: Not bad, it's fine enough for one of those clusterfu--er, goulash-type brews.

From notes 12/20/11: A double black, double dry hopped, double IPA this pours inky black with a hint of brown opaqueness at the top, bottom and sides when held to the light. The pour produces a large, foamy, tan head that leaves very nice lacing. Aroma is dominated by grassy and floral hops, backed by dark roasted malt and caramel with some chocolate and hint of coffee. There is also a roasted/char/burnt and faintly smoky character that becomes more noticeable as the brew warms. Taste is similar but more balanced than the nose. Grass and pine hops with pine dominate in the bitter finish. Malts caramel, toffee, brown sugar, a hint of chocolate, smoke and faint coffee. There is a char/burnt taste in the finish that intensifies in the aftertaste.

"Try as he might, he couldn't get it right, so he dumped everything he could find from the fridge and cupboard into one giant boiling brew, resulting in this stew of 2-row, black wheat, Munich malt and a 14-hop variety asplifidation of Willamette, Galena, Mt. Hood, Nugget, Perle, Aroma, Bobek, Aurora, Styrian, Golding, Magnum, Columbus, Summit, Millennium, and Crystal." Brewed in the style of a Black IPA (Cascadian Ale). A one time release in SweetWater's Dank Tank series, this beer was released in October 2011.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber to a SweetWater snifter. Served above 55º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy frothy mocha cream head over a very deep, dark brown body. Retention is very good and lacing is light and streaked. 4.5

(Smell) Strong hop notes still persist, with bold piney, resinous and peppery hop notes up front, and milder notes of grapefruit, pithy citrus and lemongrass linger in the back. There is a perceivable strong bitterness as well. The malt build consists of a roasted black malt accenting a mild caramel body, with lesser notes of dry chocolate and cold coffee. Some perceivable alcohol is also notable. Potency is medium/high. 4

(Taste) The hops don't come through as well in the flavor but present a bouquet of fruity, dry citrus notes and an herbal tea-like spiciness best preserved of all. The malt profile, although pale to compare to the hop arrangement, manages a high drinkability with a mild sweetness and a lighter body than expected. Concludes with a dragging pine bitterness and a note of black patent malt for a sharp, charred finish. It's clear that many of the hop delicates have long since dropped off, but this beer is still altogether enjoyable to drink. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, oily, slick. Carbonation adds a soft creaminess and froth to the texture for a mild mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style and medium/heavy overall. Balance is in favor of bitter over sweet notes, with few imperfections to note. Alcohol presence is mild. 4

(Overall) I felt that this beer would be horrific to drink at its age, but it's managed to age quite gracefully, keeping a lot of the more potent hop notes present, the bitterness mellows out significantly and the malt profile neither runs thin nor wears the palate out. After seeing this beer at SweetWater's brewery as recent as last August (2013-IPA Day), I find that Ghoulash is a testament to how well a Black IPA can maintain its flavor. 3 years may be a stretch, however- so if you've been cradling a bottle like I have, you should really set a date. 4
