Appearance: Fairly clear, amber-hued body with a small (though sustained), sudsy, faint ecru head.

Smell: Aromatic scents of citrus fruits, spice, and blistering resins cut with some alcoholic wafts and rounded out by some sweetish, nutty caramel notes.

Taste: Sugary sweet at the opening, but also a rush of alcohol, though, thankfully, it's not overbearing. Lightly toasted bready malts with plenty of caramel. Faint apricot accent precedes full hop tastes of florals, pithy lemon, and tangerine with some resins and a moderate wallop of bitterness. Mostly drying and bitter on the back half and into the finish though occasionally you get a big pop of sugar.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Though not the luxurious, lovely release they brought to the ACAT in 2011, it's still a rather good beer.

On cask at the ACAT Fest 2012 in Atlanta, GA. I am writing this review based on notes I typed into my phone a week later!

A - A red amber/copper with 2 fingers of head with a nice clarity.

S - Rye malts and citrusy hops

T - Bitter, malthy, sweet, and a touch of grapefruit. A little spice as well. Caramel notes give it the sweetness.

M - Well carbonated, well balanced, with a smooth finish. High ABV is not too prevalent

O - A damn good winter warmer. I like it better than Festive

I had this a couple of times at the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, just to be sure what I thought of it. Sweetwater identifies this as a Winter Warmer, and although its abv puts it a bit strong for the category, I think it does have some characteristics that could classify it as such, so I've added it that way to the database. I could certainly easily see an argument for this being listed as a barleywine as well. In any case, I thought it was a lovely beer, and more understated by a good deal than the Terrapin offering right next to it (the BFM/Terrapin collaboration barleywine). In this case, that can be a good thing. Poured a nice copper with a fine bubbly head and excellent clarity. The aromas were a little light, but you do get a citrusy sweetness, a bit of nuttiness and spice. The taste, on the other hand is superb. Very balanced with citrusy bitterness, nice herbal and spice notes, and a long Pekoe tea finish, with notes of orange peel and lots of tannic bitterness. The tea notes, especially, are striking. The mouthfeel is big and chewy, but not overly sweet. The casking adds an element of smoothness to the brew, and the finish is quite dry and with a refreshing bite of the tannins. I really enjoyed this, and commented to a couple of people that if the flavors of this beer had been combined with the aromas from the Terrapin offering, it would have been the clear winner of the fest to my mind. Excellent.
