Seeing as how I was a fan of Southern Tier's 2X Rye, I decided to give this rye IPA a try.

To be honest, I was looking for more of a hops-blast since this is an IPA. I am thankful it isn't so bitter it puckers my mouth, and all the rye and malts do make a nice flavour. It just wasn't what I was looking for in a rye IPA.

12 oz bottle with a drink by 7.15.14 date on the side. Pretty sure this was one of the last barrels brewed as Sweetwater announced its retirement a few months back

A - Bronze with some clarity, 1 finger of head and sticky lace left on the glass.

S - Rye, spices and orange spices. Bitter hops

T - Bitter hops and orange zest. Lots of Rye. Its not really working for me...

M - Medium bodied and well carbonated. Average...

O - Points for being a different type of IPA, but not nearly as good as their classic IPA.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a hazy, amber-copper coloring with a thin, filmy, sparse, white surface coat of head. Aromas of toasted grain, bitter and resinous hops, bitter rye grain bill, citrus highlights, and roasted notes. Flavors are tangy sweet and bitter blended together. A forward blast of grapefruit, pineapple, and apricot, with a backbone of toasted grains and resinous hops. The bitterness is well balanced by the tropical fruit profiles. Light, effervesced body, which ends up as a crisp, almost sharp finish. The aftertaste is more of the tropical fruit than anything. Interesting brew. Light and fruity, which may be good for those just trying their hands in the rye field of beers.
