If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, start off the day right with this smooth and silky-textured stout. Hints of sweetness are finished off by a hearty addition of roasted barley, lending a rich espresso flavor. This stout truly is the breakfast of champions, all in one glass.

Look: deep brown-black with tannish head that quickly disappears; not creamy

Smell: dark chocolatey, coffee, layered aromas--more than I expected, and darker

Taste: chocolatey and dark roast coffee, a touch of caramel malt, maybe very slight raisin, smooth and balanced, almost no bite/aftertaste

Feel: smooth but not creamy, low carbonation

Overall: Quite impressed. Loved the dense coffee-cocoa flavors and thick, smooth feel even without a big, creamy head. Just very balanced.

Very good stout with and chocolate, burnt coffee note, easy drinking, amaxing price and good overall drinking stout right under 7%.

Very well balanced

Lovely head on the nearly black brew. Coarse mouthful of carbonation. All of the shades of roasted malt with a charred background.

This is really strongly coffee flavored, but the surprise is that's apparently from all the malt. That's what the brewer claims, noting that it's finished with "roasted barley." In any case the coffee flavor is amplified by the bitterness. Grainy flavors with a touch of burnt cereal. More of the bitter twang to finish.

Overall this is strongly flavored and more of a challenge to the taste bids than typical stouts. Still, it's a robust malty mouthful for the adventurous. On tap at the brewpub in Santee. I see it's available in bottles now as well.

Had this on tap at the brewery!!

Look - Pours pitch black with a beautiful tan head that sits through out the beer.

Smell - lots of coffee! Roasted malt and chocolate as a backbone

Taste - chocolate mocha smoothie! Carbonation is just right and pairs well with the many flavors of the beer

Overall - having had the breakfast stout from Founders I am so happy to have this one in San Diego. It's a good breakfast stout!
