Wow, this was a major disappointment. You get the cabernet, but no sweetness whatsoever. Was a muddled bottle of junk. Was hoping for so much more. Waste...

Deep Ellum Brewing Co. "Four Swords Cabernet Barrel Quad"
on tap @ Craft Pride, Austin, TX on 5 November 2015

Notes: Listed at 9.5% ABV. Very dark brown almost-black body with ruby and mahogany highlights beneath a short but creamy tan head. Malty in the nose with a touch of dark fruit, dried fruit, and earth, perhaps some yeasty spice. The flavor delivers smooth malt with caramel, oak and candy sugar sweetness. The Cabernet comes through to helping to balance the sweet malt, as does a slight bit of woody oak with its dryness, and some Belgian yeast phenols. Moderately bitter, or so it seems, but balanced in the end. Medium-full in body with a creamy, silky feel. It's good but it's almost too soft, too rounded, without anything to perk it up - although I could easily see this as a relaxing night cap or even cigar beer. Ahh, it hadn't even occurred to me, the alcohol is really well hidden. Enjoyable.

650 mL bottle. Amber body. Big khaki head. Smells strong of red wine. Oak. Caramel. Dark fruits and some earthy notes. The taste is very earthy. Leathery. Up front has a hint of red wine fruitiness. Then deep caramel and an earthy finish. Heavy. Kinda sweet. Pretty good quad, surprisingly.

This thing is super dark. Some brown around the edges. Small khaki head that sticks around.

Intense toasted oak and Cabernet, vanilla, raisin, prune, sweetness and spice.

The Cabernet comes across really well on the flavor. Woody, dark fruit, slight spice and sweet caramel and brown sugar.

Carbonation is low and the body medium. Finishes dry.

The barrel is omnipresent and changes the game here. Doesn't make the beer any better than the original for me.

Perfect combo of a Belgian and red wine. Incredible!
