On tap at Hay Merchant in Houston, TX
A: Pours a dark brown, nearly black color with some ruby around the edges. A one two finger white/light tan head rises with good retention. Plenty of lace is left behind.
S: A mix of soapy, floral, and resinous hops up front. That is followed by caramel malt, sweetness and burnt toast. A lingering bitterness. Like most from this "style" this just does mix right for me.
T: The flavors meld a bit better than the nose. The resinous hops are apparent, but not at odds with the malt going on. Toasted malt, caramel sweetness, light chocolate. Basically a hoppy porter.
M/D: A medium body and carbonation. A slightly soapy and oily feel. Resinous and slick. Not hard to drink. Enjoyable for what it is. Though not something I am coming back to often.
As this "style" goes, not bad. Though I have yet to see any definition to what this style should be. Really not the worst of its ilk, but I wish this kind of beer would go away.
