L: Pours a super cloudy orange with a tall beige head.
S: Sweet caramel, malts, boozy, vanilla, whiskey barrel.
T: Follows the nose, hop-forward, not as sweet as most barleywines.
F: Medium-bodied, coarser than most barleywines, warming, high carbonation.

Dangerously drinkable and with a depth of American ale complexities, the mind numbing effects of barleywine come with a bittersweet session thanks to the competent team at Deep Ellum Brewing.
Deep chestnut amber in color, the hazy ale crowns with a dense ecru froth. Aptly named, Numb Comfort rounds the nose with deeply caramelized, toasted barley malt, a moderate citrus tone and a plethora of dark fruit, stone fruit and grassy nuances. Its upstart in flavor has a juicy malt taste of caramel, toffee, sorghum, toast and pecan.
As the flavors unfold, its rich barley presence is unwavering. But the growing hop presence brings a sharp balance that seem from the peels of grapefruit and orange. Curacao liquor adds a spiciness to balance the lingering sweetness while the taste of macerated cherry and date bring a subtle fruitiness to the middle palate. Remnants of barley keep an element of pecan lingering into a bitter, grassy and citrusy finish.
Full in body, the beer's creamy texture adds fullness to the initial sip, but facilitates dryness late especially in the presence of hop resins, powerful alcohol and a slight toasty char from grain. A long and bittersweet linger of curacao, licorice and citrus peels give the ale a great sense of drinkability.

Barley wine, yes indeed. Honey and sweet with a kick of barley. One of the better barleywines I have tasted. I get a big buttery bread that has a great carry forward.

Opens as a gusher... grrr. Pours a hazed & effervescent brown/haze; with a thumb of cream colored head. Stays turbid, pretty good lacing & head retention. The gushing is not loved
S: Sourmash & cakeyness. Vanilla & a little caramel.
T: Follows the nose, woodyness & dryness as well, plus a little vanilla up front. Vanilla, Sourmash, dryness & oakyness, faint raisin & Port notes as this warms. Finishes dry, raisiny with, woody & leafy hops & more Sourmash
MF: Medium body, firm carbonation, thins out a touch once warm
Good take on the style, only the gushing drags this down
