Best by 2/11/16.

Appearance: Medium caramel color with superb clarity. Poured a fizzy off-white head. A bit tepid looking.

Aroma: Grain and earthy/piney hops with a touch of citrus. Not really the hop explosion I was expecting given the description of "Bright & Tropical" on the bottle.

Taste: Way on the bitter side. Nothing wrong with that in an IPA, but the flavor just doesn't fit the description. While there is a bit of citrus buried deep down, the major hop flavor here is earthy. There is some caramel from the malt but it goes nearly unnoticed by the overwhelming bitterness, which makes it feel more like a session IPA than its 6.5% ABV would suggest. The finish is a bright point of sweetness from the malt followed quickly by an aftertaste of piney bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Barely medium in body but feels much heavier due to the excess carbonation. I could see this being a knock out on nitro. The creamy head would increase the body and tame the bitterness. However, as it stands it has below average drinkability.

Final Thoughts: I love a good IPA, and don't get me wrong Soul Style is a good one, but I have to subtract points for not fitting the description on the bottle and the poor mouthfeel. The notion of creating a solid single IPA in a world of double and triple IPAs is a good one, but I expect more from Green Flash. Especially when they entice me with a hop list including Simcoe and Citra. Would I drink it again? It wouldn't be my first choice.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass

A –– An attractive, clear, saturated orange with a frothy, lacy, white head

S –– A bright, strong, clear aroma of citrus and pine, tons of mango and pineapple! Smells great!

T –– Like it smells; with tons of fruit and a wind over grass freshness, just the right amount of pine bitterness on the finish and aftertaste; super drinkable and yummy

M –– Feels great in the mouth, perfect medium body and carbonation for this style, sharp on the tongue with only the mildest oily hop finish, leaves you wanting more

O –– I’ve had this a few times before, and as a $10/6.5% 6-pack it does not disappoint! Very glad Green Flash made this sessionable beer a regular all year part of their line; just a bright, highly drinkable, tropical IPA.

Green Flash rarely misses the mark, in my opinion, and this is no exception. This is what I look for in a good IPA. It's refreshing, but still very tasteful. A lot of citrus and grass notes in the nose, with a super balanced and crisp taste. The malt is slightly sweet caramel and there some fruity apple and citrus notes in there as well. The hops aren't in your face at first, but wrap up the beer really nicely toward the finish to leave the palate just dry enough for the next sip. Had this on draft and would get again.

I will be buying this again as a regular go to. Great low alcohol beer at 6.5%.

Had on draft at a place in the suburbs of Richmond, VA. They poured into a chilled pint glass, which I detest, but it'll do. Pours a clear golden color with a slight orange tint. Head dissipated fairly quickly and left some lacing, but not much, but this is the fault of the glass I believe, because in the past it's had better head retention. Smell is bright and fruity, mostly of zesty citrus/grapefruit. Love it. Taste is even better, and the best part of this beer, really. Strong citrus peel flavor, again with the grapefruit, so I'm guessing they used cascade hops. Some slight grassy and piney flavor, and the bitterness is balanced, even toned back ever so slightly, but lingers well on the tongue. Top notch taste for a single IPA. Again, really digging this. The feel is light to medium in body with just enough carbonation to keep things bright. Overall, I'm really loving this, and would recommend anytime to any hop head that wants something not so heavy as the double IPAs that have made Greenflash deservedly well-known. Very solid single, and I'm digging the hell out of it.

L: Hazy golden orange with a small white head. Splotches of lacing.

S: Orange peel, white grapefruit flesh, lemon zest, pine needles, biscuit malt.

T: An abundance of citrus. The essence of orange and grapefruit, like the peel, pith, oils, and flesh all shredded and blended together, bitter and sweet simultaneously with a bright zestiness of pure citrus that never lets up. There's a touch of pine in the background that amplifies it. The malt backbone is biscuity, lightly bready and toasty, but mostly neutral. Finishes with a classic crispness with a touch of lingering citrus bitterness that tastes like actual orange peel, but not immensely bitter. Well rounded and very crisp.

F: Medium-bodied, smooth and well-rounded, moderate carbonation. Lightly sweet at first, but then crisp and lightly dry by the finish.

O: A really good West Coast style IPA. Beautifully citrusy and piney, yet crisp and refreshing.

A: The beer is clear amber yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a finger and a half high off white head that gradually died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of tropical fruits—mangos seem to stand out in particular—are present in the nose along with notes of grapefruit citrus and hints of pine.
T: The taste has flavors of grapefruit and melons along with a moderate to strong amount of bitterness. The finish is filled with bitter grapefruit and hints of pine.
M: It feels medium-bodied and quite crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has interesting aromas and flavors of tropical fruits and citrus and also delivers a nice bite in the mouthfeel.

Best by 11 Feb 16:

Pours a hazed, beautiful golden with a large fluffy head. Web-like lacing sticks down the glass.

The smell is of huge tropical and citrus fruits - oranges, mango, grapefruit, lemon.

The taste is of citrus fruits - grapefruit, mango, orange, lemon and tropical. A solid malt backbone keeps the bitterness juicy bitter rather than raw bitter. It has a fruity/floral (slightly banana-ish?) finish. Very smooth. (Not quite chewy - more juicy).

A wonderful juicy/fruity hoppy IPA! I can drink plenty of this and be very happy!

Pours a slightly hazy orange golden, quarter inch of fine white head retains well as a film.

Smells of honey, bready malts, and citrusy fresh hops.

Tastes of honey malt and grapefruit citrus hops. Bit of bready malt undertone and some slight pine in the finish.

Medium body with tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

Solid flavorful IPA, lots to like. Goes down pretty easy. Works well in warm weather and doesn't feel as strong as it is. Definitely worth trying.

A good beer but a little off balance with the malt and hops. I'm
Getting way more of the malt. I'm glad that I was able to try it, but would I buy it again?... Probably not.

All citrus, not much hop bite in the back end like you expect in an IPA. I don't blame them - seems as if craft newbies just want to drink orange juice.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear yellow gold with a medium pillowy white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is fruity, piney, peppery hops.

The flavor is sweet bready malts and some fruit with a big piney, resiny bitterness that has some harsh notes. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a solid IPA.
