Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flanders Drive is the result of intense Brewmaster contemplation. Built on a canvas of structured malts, the sourness develops during extended aging in wood barrels lending to the beer’s depth and complexity. Heady top notes of tart cherry and dark fruit mingle with rich, subtle malt in the background for a truly satisfying sour ale.

Pours a brownish red with little to no head.

Smells of cherries, cranberries, vanilla, and red wine vinegar.

Taste is similar to the smell, tart cherries and cranberries with a mouth puckering sourness reminiscent of red wine vinegar. I don't get a lot of bourbon or the barrel in this beer but I did just drink a BCBS so maybe those taste buds are a little saturated right now. There is a hint of vanilla. Very nice beer, one of the best Flanders Red Ales I've had.

A big shout out to Mike at Green Flash for sending this out to me.

Dark ruby color with light brown head. Aroma has tart fruits, balsamic vinegar and bourbon. Taste is really sour, acetic, astringent with nice bourbon and caramel in the background. Body is light, dry and astringent with a good amount of carbonation. Really nice, complex taste.

With one foot in Belgium and the other in Kentucky, the worlds of Flemish red ale and bourbon barrel aging are arranged in a marriage that brings the best out of both.

Flanders Drive pours a rusty brownish red with a short but confident sandy froth. Its succulent and tantalizing scent billows over with dark cherry, balsamic, oak and vinous red wine. Once on the the tongue, its malty taste is resolute with dark fruit, taffy and toasted nuttiness.

The taste simply blossoms on the middle palate as the fruits of cherry, plum, date and fig play delicately on the tongue. A follow-up of cider, dry red wine, and balsamic offer its savory satisfaction with a robust, nearly chocolaty tangy. What's left is a highly acidic finish with the odd allure of acetone, oak, vanilla and coconut.

With its taste coming to a close, the beer's medium-light body retains enough of a malty heft to highlight the beer's brazen acidity and its vinegar-like charm. Lightly bittered and softly boozy, it's culminating taste is quick with fruit and wine in a medium-length afterglow.

This was sent by Green Flash as an apology beer for Silva. Apology accepted! A tongue shredding Flanders Red that has been balanced out by the influence of the bourbon barrel, resulting in a delicious and complex beer. Reminiscent of a Love Child series brew. I will definitely buy bottles of this when I see it. Tasty stuff!

Bottle sampled at a tasting. Dark ruby pour with a small tan head. Smells of cherries, rosé wine, vanilla and bourbon. Tastes like vinegar, vanilla, macerated cherries and bourbon barrel. Excellent.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Brownish red. Small cream-colored collar.

Smell - Acetic and oaky. Vanilla. Caramel. I don't get much bourbon directly, but the vanilla and oak play nicely with the acidity.

Taste - Moderate acetic sourness. Caramel malts. Bourbon is much more prominent here, along with a nice vanilla and malty flavor lingering in the back.

Mouthfeel - I seldom say something isn't sour enough, but I think this could use a bit more. Well carbonated.

Overall - Smells great, but the flavors are a little tame.

Received this in trade with Jvillefan earlier this year... Thanks a bunch Michael, this was REALLY well done.

Looks like a light cola on the pour... tan head with spotty lacing.

Nose is pretty proper... balanced acetic/fruity notes... dark cherries and plum.. bourbon is there but shows as more of a vanilla presence.

If you subtract the barrel presence, this is a better Flanders Red than many of the Continental versions that limp to our local shelves. Again very fruity with the expected acetic/tannic wine notes... fermented out sweet cherries with underripe plums. The barrels add an all encompassing vanilla character..

A residual sweetness adds to the body... good bubbles lead to a bit of a burpy burn for me.

This is a winner... Damn happy I was able to try it... Thanks a bunch Michael... You are a fantastic trader.
