This Single Hopped Pale Ale is built on an English malt base of Golden Promise, 2-Row malted barley, and Caramalt to allow the hop qualities to shine through. Pacific Gem’s hop intensity presents top notes of pungent pine and grapefruit rind accented by guava with a long, lingering finish.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass best before 6/4/16. Pours a very attractive orange with a 2 inch sticky white head that leaves beautiful lace behind.

Smell pine, herbal tea, marijuana, tangerine, papaya, and grapefruit.

Taste follows very tropical, with some earthy hops, pine, marijuana, and a nice hit of grapefruit in the finish.

Mouthfeel is almost medium, perfect amount of life, not really dry, and great drinkability.

Overall I think this is excellent, drinks bigger than 5.5%.

12oz bottle from the variety case - imperial nonic glass
First had this on 10/10/15

Light caramel color body with some mild cloudy haze to it. Massive and dense khaki tan suds. Exhibits some incredible hang time that plasters up my glass with sticky lace. The hops leap forward presenting tropical fruit notes of mango, papaya, and passion fruit with a citrusy backdrop and some flowery spiced herbs. Base bready English pale malt comes through with a light toasted caramel note. A touch of stone fruit and some solid earthiness there as well. Flavor is a tropical blend of mango, guava, and grapefruit peel, along with some light earthy pine, pepper spiced papaya, and assorted grassy herbals. Balanced with a healthy addition of bready malt, light orchard fruit, and a mild caramel-honey like sweetness. Has a reserved bitterness overall and no alcohol to report. Moderate to lower body with a nice frothy texture and good drying in the finish. Fairly clean overall.

This was a solid single hop offering. Was really intrigued by what the NZ Pacific Gem has to offer and this brew showcases it well.

Dark amber colored with blonde and dark orange tints, some sediment. Head is stable at 1 finger.

Aroma of buttery malts, lightly dank. Fresh cut onion, and very clean hop. Nice nose.

Lots of pine up the sides and toffee in the middle. Some orange, some pineapple, some mango. The toffee isn't overwhelming and there's a lot of clean, fruity notes. Not bad at all.

Creamy, with explosive carbonation. semi dry finish with some dustiness.

Not the worst, not the best. Still a decent beer worth checking out if you are curious or are a Green Flash fan (does that exist?)

Pours a crystal clear deep gold producing 2+ fingers of foamy, somewhat lasting head that leaves a nice coating of lace. Aroma is thin with fruity berry, floral, pale & cereal malt notes. Taste is a delicate (for the style) blend of citrus, tropical fruit, floral earthiness & sweet malt notes. Finishes dry with a leafy hoppiness. Aftertaste is mostly a dry, bitter, herbal earthiness. Mouthfeel: light-medium bodied, moderate carbonation with a light prickle, becoming dry in the finish & intensifying in the aftertaste.

Pours an amber orange color with a one finger white head. A bit hazy. Aroma is very mild of malt and hops. Taste is the same but a bit more pronounced with a bitterness on the end like an IPA. Light carbonation and a light to moderate body with a tad of oiliness. Not impressed with this one.

Had this on 2016-09-29 in Napperville, IL from a 12oz bottle with a Best Buy date of 2016-07-16. Sigh. I bought it at World of Beers as a single bottle and couldn't check the date beforehand since it was served with dinner. They should have pulled it.

A - Clear gold with a 3-finger head and moderate lace.

S - Mild citrus, biscuit and earthy spice.

T - Spice and pepper at first, then biscuit with a touch of honey and lightly tropical. Finish is bitter for a Pale Ale.

M - Light-medium body and carbonation.

O - Spicy but not complex. I guess The Pacific Gem hop won't be a favorite of mine but then again, this beer was past the Best Buy date.

Always a fan of single-hop treatments, just for science's sake, and this was particularly appealing as I've precious little acquaintance with Pacific Gem. Good APA base: ruddy golden color; good effervesce (and attendant visual indicators); nice zesty nose, with celery leaf and kumquat and marjoram and soft layers of dry, grassy or slightly white-oaky sugars. Flavors boast caramelized orange peel and essential oils, lots more zesty herbals, with pleasantly bitter components: celery leaf, watercress, cilantro, lemongrass, and pickled tea-leaf. Those last two notes carry on the strongest, leaving a mild, biting linger that provides an almost shrub-like freshness. A solid APA with a nice window into another fun NZ hop.

I really, really like Green Flash Brewing. That said, this is the first beer I've had from them that just didn't do it for me.

The look of the beer is beautiful, with a highly-carbonated straw color and a long-lasting head. On the nose, you get blackberry, oak, malt and lemon.

Taste is shockingly malty. Like, really malty. Some pine in the background, a bit of lemon and berry if you really search for it, but mostly malt. This drinks a lot more like a malty lager with slight hop notes than it does an IPA.

I was looking forward to a great, unique, Green Flash beer. What this unfortunately turned out to be was a cliché beer that any brewery could have made.
