Notes / Commercial Description:
Live long and drink Cosmic Ristretto. This highly revered brew will go down in history as one of the first graduates of our Genius Lab program into our front line. Marvel at its rich black appearance with bruleed edges and mocha-colored beer foam. Breathe in its coffee aroma and sweet malts, and savor its smooth, espresso, chocolate flavor. Don’t fight its gravitational pull. This bold, complex, java-centric Baltic Porter with Espresso is irresistible. Houston, we have a problem, my glass is empty.

The bottle says "Best By 10 AUG 16"

Appearance: Black body with a few beads of reddish brown where light makes it through. The head is thick and creamy with a light brown color. Good head retention with moderate lacing.

Aroma: It has a nice woody aroma with a good strong note of coffee and a bit of what smells like ancho chile peppers. It is a very inviting and intriguing aroma that I find outstanding.

Taste: The beer leads with a very distinct coffee bean flavor. Not bitterness at all. It almost has that fruity taste that you can get out of coffee which is very nice. It delivers a slightly spicy character with a faint earthy character. The malt presence is absent behind the strong flavor of coffee. The bottle says that the beer is made with Belgian Candy Sugar but it looks like the largest contribution it has to the beer is the ABV because I don't get any sweetness or character from it. I would be hard pressed to blindly identify this as a Baltic Porter because the coffee really covers up any other flavors in the beer. No alcohol flavor.

Mouthfeel: It has very low bitterness. The body is full but not thick and the finish is dry.

Overall: It's a good coffee beer. If you are looking for something that has a good coffee flavor then you will find it here and it really shows that this is what they set out to do with this beer. It doesn't waffle between flavors or muddy its character; it is clearly just a coffee beer. As a coffee beer I would say it is outstanding. As a Baltic Porter I have no idea how this beer would fare because I can't really get to the heart of it. If you are looking for a nice coffee beer I would say that you should pick this one up. Even if you have a favorite coffee beer it is worth trying this out because, like the variety in coffee roasts and beans, this beer has its own unique flavor.

I came into this not expecting a lot, but was blown away. The coffee in this is not for the burnt starbucks lover, but people that like good espresso... with a bit of sugar. Creamy feel and amazing taste. I hope this comes back yearly.

Came in a goblet a deep dark cola color with creamy beige head atop that settles into a frothy mass.Dark Italian roasted coffee stands out most in the nose along with a bit of char.Coffee and bitter chocolate really hit home on the palate along with that char and some dark fruit in the finish.I love a good Baltic porter and this delivers a great feel and great flavors.Well done.

This beer poured black in color with a tiny tan head.
Intense coffee aroma, then a little chocolate.
Coffee taste first, kind of a dark roast. Cocoa and bittersweet chocolate later.
Lighter bodied than I had anticipated,

Dark brown in color to nearly black. There's a half inch of tightly knit creamy beige head. The aroma is of intensely bitter and bold espresso with a tiny bit of smoke. I taste intensely bitter and bold espresso along with dark malt and fig. The mouth is viscous, thick, and chewy.

L: Pours opaque dark brown to black under a moderately persistent 1” cream to light tan foam stand.

S: Big espresso aromas with some roast malt.

T: Roasty with a trace of prune. Malt roast flavors lead the attack with espresso roast becoming more prominent from mid palate to the finish. The Baltic porter flavors are clean and moderate with a trace of sweetness to provide balance and support for the espresso.
F: Very creamy, smooth, full body, medium low carbonation.

O: A very delightful drink that suggests a lightly carbonated espresso lightly sweetened by malt.

On tap at Engine 15 (JAX).
Very dark reddish-brown body that is topped by a decent head.

Nice aroma that says "coffee!" but has notes of dark bread and hints of dark chocolate.

Flavor: sweet up front and nicely balanced (bitter-sweet) overall. Faint dark fruits, chocolate and fine, black coffee.

The body is smooth, medium-full,and well carbonated.

Tasting notes from May 25th, 2016. Had on-tap at Alley Katz in Citrus Heights, CA

Appearance - Served into a pint with a khaki, quarter finger width head, the brew is deep, dark cola brown with a thin, broken layer of suds across the top. Lacing is fair, with broken webbing making up the bulk of it.

Smell - Coffee roast, with underlying notes of caramel and chocolate.

Taste - Follows the nose. Coffee roast and lesser chocolate, while hints of caramel and cream come into play. Faint earthiness and moderate grassy bitterness start to cut through as the beer warms. Finishes with a fair balance of roasted character and sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium in body with light, tingly carbonation. Silky, almost creamy texture. Uniquely refreshing with a semi-dry finish.

Overall - Great Baltic. full flavored, but light enough to be enjoyed on even the hottest of days. One to keep an eye out for in the future.

Very nice mocha head, good size and retention, and lots of lacing.

Aroma is slightly metallic, bringing notes of soured fruit and grapes to go with the expected burnt coffee and cacao notes. A little bit of vanilla and cream; robust and roasty. Nothing on the nose you can't get from other stouts, nor quite as polished.

First impression as the brew hits the palate is quite positive: notes of coffee and cacao. The excitement quickly fades, however, as first third - and the middle - quickly give way to a muddled mix of stout flavors. Roasted barley, tobacco, sour dark fruit, char. Nutty, roasty, slightly ashy finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth: fairly thick, especially for a Baltic porter, but drinkable and smooth as expected for the style. Fairly long finish, carrying a touch of alcohol heat.

Really, there's very little coffee in this; if someone told me this was a standard porter, I wouldn't know it's supposed to be espresso-infused. That's not to say it's bad; it's just nothing special for me.

I want more coffee, less sweetness and a little crisp mouthfeel for the lager edge. This came off like a dull imperial stout, which is still a tasty brew, but the bar is high for this style.

BBD 6 Jul 16

Pours an a crimson hued mahogany with a thumb+ of rocky tan head. Head tightens up as it warms, sheets of lacing & the head more or less falls apart over time

S: Coffee, not much, but plenty of coffee, turns towards mocha once warm

T: Espresso, a little coffee grind, dryness & Baker's chocolate & a little dryness up front. Some woody hops & charred grain mix with coffee as this warm, starts turning slightly astringent as well, some caramel sneaks in as well. Finishes with coffee/espresso, vanilla, a little dryness, plus a kiss of vanilla

MF: Medium body fairly firm carbonation up front, smooths out a bit once warm

Green Flash done good with this one, well worth a pick up, not perfect, but enjoyable

Pretty jazzed on the idea here from GF ( as well as their Dia de los Serranos recent release -- good to see them branching out a bit). Out of the bottle this is a dark brown/mahogany color, a bit of light still making it through the glass, and almost looking a bit murky inside. Not much head at all nor any retention. Smell is cold coffee, some sweetness (from the Belgian candi sugar, I assume), maybe a vein of sweetened dark fruit too, and a bit of toasted malt. Palate is similar, pretty darn coffee forward, but with those interesting pops of sweetness/dark fruit/etc. thrown in to mix it up a bit. Not a bad brew, and one a coffee lover would likely dig, but the slightly thin body, sweetness, and character of the coffee didn't really combine to create something I love.

Deep dark color with excellent head and decent lacing. Aroma is big with chocolate and coffee. Taste is nice with heavy espresso and an awesome creaminess that takes this beer to the next level..

2 finger head on pour that fades rapidly, some lacing. Deep dark brown. Weaker than expected nose with coffee and some malt. Very dry, almost like drinking a cup of black coffee with some malt presence. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. Probably to style, but wishing it had a touch of sweetness to balance the big coffee.
