Notes / Commercial Description:
As craft beer pioneers, we embarked on an expedition to brew the benchmark West Coast IPA. We ventured into the unknown and struck gold, discovering a tantalizing menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical and grapefruit zest, Columbus for hop pungency, Centennial for pine notes, Citra for citrus zest and Cascade for floral aroma are layered throughout the brewing process. West Coast IPA® exemplifies the Green Flash spirit of adventure and discovery.

Appearance: Nice golden brown color, good white head, leaves great lacing

Smell: Full of pine, resin, citrus, and floral hops

Taste: Pine and resin hops are up front and in your face. They make no apologies. But, if you can make it through that, you'll notice some more delicate hop tones in there as well, next you get to citrus. Then, floral hops come through. There is a nice malt backbone in there to stand up to the massive hops

Mouthfeel: Medium body, good carbonation

Overall: This brew is excellent. A top rated beer for sure. Gladly will pick up again as long as it is on the fresh side. This has a best by date of 7/30/14, so I'm assuming that means this is 2 months old.

Poured 12oz bottle into New Belgium globe

A-Poured a golden amber pour with slight haze. Solid white head and lacing.

S-Aroma of grapefruit, orange, mango, malts, and pine.

T-The taste is clean with the fruits, pine and malts balanced nicely. Solid bitter profile with a relaxing malt ending.

M-Mouthfeel is medium light body, good carbonation. Clean, crisp, biting finish.

O-Very unique IPA, love the flavors.

(best by date: 01/23/14? or /15? - that part was rubbed out - bought the bottle chilled at Monde Market - it had presumably been chilled for quite some time, they rotate their stock often - carefully poured into a 20oz pint)

A: hazy orange-amber liquid with a messy, sticky creme-colored head - various bubble sizes - saw this might have sediment, so that would account for head structure... nice large drapes of

S: absolutely fantastic blend of fruity, et al, aromas - overall impression is that of a glazed orange-creme donut.... further whiffs reveal subtle sub-aromas of lemon tart and a mixture of chrysanthemum and baby pine needles... holy shit, though, this smell is wow-tastic!... true art in IPA.... booze-y/perfumy alcohol does later poke through

T: bitterness to the fore - this is where more subtle nuances of the hop blend shine - heavy, almost menthol-medicinal pine (could be the alcohol/esters contributing) - tongue scraping bitter... strong, tonic lemon-lime... bit of a green onion zing on the end... i want to say a faint bit of sweet crystal malt in the aftertaste, but that could very well be another (fruit-like) layer of the hops.... certainly a peppery spice, touch of toastiness in the finish.... the orange donut thing, at first silent, slowly inches its way back into your consciousness

M: with all the focus on the electric-neon flavor, the soft-foamy contact and booze-washed, gritty malt foundation gets little notice.... this goes down pretty easily.... bit of a heaviness or nectar-y slickness to its flow - the relentless, burning bitterness balances nicely though... ultimately, dry with a light-moderate boozy glow

O: sorry it took me so long to get back to trying this again - sampled it for the first time maybe 4 years ago.... definitely a stand-out American IPA - nice job!
